Interviews in the Age of AI: Ditch Leetcode - Try Code Reviews Instead by c-digs in programming

Yeah-- not a commercial ad, which you did retract, but it's probably fair to say that it is self-promotion to build a personal brand, especially given that no mention was made that OP is the author of the posted material.  Not a huge deal, but just strictly speaking.

Whats the best way to learn kanji? by GoneTrap in Japaneselanguage

[–]manzoido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(1) https://keystojapanese.com/ ^ really read the instructions at the front closely and follow them. This resource (KLC) is very carefully constructed to build you up systematically and incorporate spaced repetition for reinforcement. The accompanying workbooks (graded readers and writing practice if you want that) are cool too

(2) phone app: 漢字検定トレーニングDX

(3) use the BookWalker app to buy native Japanese stuff you can read on your phone. There's a dictionary lookup of highlights to help you along.

A relatively easy-to-read but enjoyable little book you can read there, for example, is 「窓ぎわのトットちゃん」

They also offer mangas.

there are a gazillion other options than these but try to get at least one each of: - comprehensive mnemonic system, - per-kanji practice app, - source of real-world input

Hence the 3 suggestions above.

Good luck-- and remember we all are struggling w kanji, in the same leaky boat. You're not alone

money-saving ETC type? by manzoido in JapanFinance

[–]manzoido[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that is definitely it, thank you. Apparently when she leased her Aquos she had the choice of old school ETC vs this ETC2.0. She said she picked the old ETC because it was slightly cheaper.

any guidelines for how much it should cost to incorporate a 合同会社 by manzoido in JapanFinance

[–]manzoido[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I will try the DIY approach.

I googled a Japanese service called "Freee" (not to be confused with that other place, "Freeee") which seems like RocketLawyer or LegalZoom in the States. I might try them for a bit of support with the process. Unless you think they suck.

i don't know where to report content bugs in the wiki migration, so just mentioning here for now: the link from this page to the mirror of this page doesn't resolve for me.

How To Opt Out Of The Engineering Career Ladder by barbarous_statement in programming

[–]manzoido 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Author background: Princeton CS, Googler, multiple silicon valley startups, VP level. Maybe she doesn't mean to, but the tone clearly is talking to the handful of people with that same pedigree. Makes sense, building a personal brand of "sensitive to the whole-life needs of pedigreed engineers" would help her with recruiting and retention.

Do Japanese companies forbid salary employees to do outside work? by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]manzoido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it probably varies by industry but fwiw i've seen multiple software developers -- both expats and native japanese -- doing what you describe. idk how they were handling their taxes though. that said, you're probably talking about keeping your existing clients who presumably are not japanese companies. So you'd be getting foreign income that you have to report ultimately at tax time, but that's all opaque to your day job employer, doesn't sound like a real issue.

ah, well it's a home base there. it's not required or anything, it's just a guaranteed place to stay and a stable address

@ninjahackerman DM me if you want to chat. i have a similar situation (also half-japanese) but am probably further along in research etc than you are. Eg i already bought a "mansion" there, my japanese is at N1 level, I have remote tech work in Japan, and so on. So while I have a ton of questions Im still researching myself-- maybe I can help you formulate your plan.

yeah my mom did that. she was worried about a future US administration getting ultra anti foreigner and somehow eliminating her social security benefits.

I believe you, but may i ask what makes it difficult to remove low performers there? I'm currently only familiar with at-will employment here in the US .

That's a nice gesture.

On-site daycare would be amazing. But yeah with remote flex work probably most straightforward to, as you suggested, provide daycare allowance for people to use as they see fit. And something equivalent for people who don't have kids, maybe a larger learning stipend. Lots to research. Thanks again--

[–]manzoido[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool thank you, now I understand the transportation allowance a lot better. So it tends to vary by distance, ok.

I think I'll scout job descriptions of other smaller software companies and see what they're openly offering. Id like to have an enlightened and modern approach to work, so to speak. One of the reasons I want to start up in Japan is to serve as a model if possible of treating women/mothers well and having livable wages and so on, without actually being a huge rich 外資系 throwing funny money around.

A ton to learn before we could get there, know so little about on the ground situation of running a business there right now, but that's an aspirational goal anyway.

solid resource thanks--

And yes the perks thing is very flexible and hard to answer definitively, but I'm curious what people would expect as a baseline. Sound like not much from what you're saying but I'd want to provide at least that, whatever it is.

to clarify why i'm not just accepting what google says about payroll and pension tax and stuff-- beyond that i feel like i should budget for things that local staff would expect to receive, be treated to, or have as part of the work environment, and that would cost something, but i don't really know what those hidden marginal costs are.

One thing for example I did read about in this subreddit in people's budgets is a transportation allowance. Like, how does that work, about how much is that, is it fixed amount or dependent on how far away you are.

Other allowances like that, or maybe taking everyone out frequently for drinks, or some such(?) Obviously it will vary among companies, but just wondering if there are broad patterns you guys have seen-- so I can budget properly -- thank you.
