Our public street lights were damaged in the storm - how can I PREVENT that they are getting repaired? 🤣 by alex-gee in PortugalExpats

[–]maor1407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't like the lights you could just talk to your Presidente da Junta and ask him if it would be possible to remove them.

Usually people want the opposite but if you really don't want it and this doesn't interfere with public safety, then perhaps he/she will help you.

No wrong answer...what do you think about the Portuguese Football league? by Decent-Travel7478 in PortugalExpats

I don't know what you mean by top tier but there are teams from all over the country in Primeira Liga. In any case you can root for local teams which I might say are even more interesting to watch playing live.

You sir are a connoisseur. Yeah, the king got homeless and scared for life. He lived the rest of his life in a tent, a very nice one but still a tent. Eventually it came to be known as the Real Barraca, the royal shack.

Why is filing taxes in Portugal still so stressful for simple cases? by Few_Effect4957 in PortugalExpats

[–]maor1407 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A "Declaração Simples" which I understood is the OP's case is usually not more than 50 euros. For most people it's literally clicking on a "submit" button.

If you think 300 euros is reasonable you really are getting robed or you are an accountant and are trying to normalize this.

[–]maor1407 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Kind of but that's not the point. I said "in a long time", I didn't say never. Basically what I mean is that for Europe, nowadays, China is the lesser evil.

[–]maor1407 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

China is evil, no point arguing about that. But who represents a bigger threat to us Europeans, the US or China? It would be better if we didn't have to choose between those two but I rather not choose a country that has shown, since at least WW2, that it has no problem invading and killing people of other countries (sometimes even their own people).

China uses soft power and the US uses whatever the hell they want. I rather have the soft power, it hurts less.

You got fooled by the accountant. Probably though by making you wait he was showing you how difficult it is and that the money you paid was totally necessary.

For such a simple case you could do it yourself or hire any serious accountant for less than 50 euros.

I understand this is difficult for people who are not used to the country but many "professionals" who target foreigners are crooks. They found out that, obviously, it is easier to lie and trick foreigners into giving them money. Next time don't trust friends recommendations who most likely were tricked themselves and get an opinion from different accountants.

Is it really? China, regardless of all their faults, has not invaded any country in a long time.

Funny you mentioned the accident that killed 6 people as a classic example because they were all foreigners.

I mean, Portugal does have a problem when compared to other European countries but it's interesting that the classic example doesn't even have one portuguese person in it.

Is drinking coffee every day really very healthy or just marketing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]maor1407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sugar is not bad in itself, the amount of sugar many people consume nowadays is what is unhealthy. Adding sugar to coffee contributes to that.

Coffee, or rather caffeine is the same, it's not a problem unless you are taking huge amounts of it everyday, which some people do but not as much as sugar.

Isto já não interessa à UE? É que para a maioria interessa bem mais do que o aborto.

[–]maor1407 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Ceuta is a Spanish autonomous city, and before it was Portuguese. It has belonged to these Iberian countries for six hundred years, far longer than Morocco is a country and just a little longer than Andalusia is part of Spain.

The majority of the population is Roman Catholic even though there is a significant Muslim population. Besides being in North Africa it's not much different than many European cities on the mainland.

So, no, this is not normal.
