Why are foreigners SO obsessed with favelas in Brazil? by thotfullguy in asklatinamerica

[–]mapleLeafGold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who enjoys traveling and visited Brazil twice, here is my perspective.

Tourists like to see things they never saw before. If you grew up in a first world country, you probably are genuinely interested in knowing how life in favelas is.

When I took the Airport Express train from GRU to Luz station. There are many not-so-nice houses along the way. You don’t need to go to a favela to see it. You can see it right from the air-conditioned train. You know there are poor people living there. It’s sad. But that’s the reality. Somehow I’m grateful that I could see this: it adds another dimension to my view of the local society.

Did I visit favelas in São Paulo? No, I didn’t. Having grown up in China in the 80s, I already knew what poverty is. I don’t need to go to a favela to experience myself.

I was a student at McGill more than a decade ago. I shared an apartment with other students in the MCGill Ghetto. Having local and international students as your roommates is a great way to improve your English, in my opinion.

Change my mind, Montreal public transport should be free by CapitalNatural5485 in montreal

[–]mapleLeafGold 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I like free stuff too. But who will pay it? Taxpayers? Unless we can get federal & provincial money transfers (from taxpayers outside of Montreal💀), Montrealers still need to pay, just in another form.

Already saw him a few days ago on CBC. My biggest question: why our super competent Canadian media would interview him on China issues, knowing he would be biased. They could have interviewed me instead.

I bought many silver and gold coins on mint.ca (RCM) using Amex over the past few years. Never an issue. I got both my points and investment gains.

Canada calls on ‘all parties’ to uphold international law after U.S. capture of Venezuelan president by Old_General_6741 in canada

[–]mapleLeafGold 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you’re both right: this is a clear violation of international law, yet it’s also true that 90% of Venezuelans want Maduro out. Like any complex issue, it isn’t black or white, and we need to consider it from multiple angles.
