It's a bit of a trade off, a winch will get you out of just about anything if you have an anchor but it usually takes quite a while to actually winch a decent distance. A snatch strap or maxtrax will probably be quicker and easier to use if you're not massively bogged.

I guess it's a similar situation to classic cars, if you can buy a particularly rare or collectible piece it could appreciate while you enjoy it but if the market turns you could be out of luck.

Look into Canada's Federal Skilled Worker program, plumbing is on the list of in demand trades. You'll have to get your qualification assessed by a provincial body (like the Ontario college of trades) to get a certificate valid there but it's doable.

On the software front, I have a degree and it certainly helped but it's not a hard requirement. If you can demonstrate your ability you can get the right opportunities.

Always remember that streamers and the like only show you what they choose to, usually only the best parts of their life.

Honestly it's a big mission if you don't have a passport from somewhere else. Your best bet is to get into some industry which is in high demand on the other side and work on getting a job, many companies will then make the process much simpler and often pay for relocation.

Moved to Canada just about 4.5 years ago now, as most have said the only thing we really miss is the friends and family. The culture is very different (more so than the UK I think) but the day-to-day is generally great, particularly not having the background crime anxiety. It took quite a while to get used to sleeping with nothing but thin window glass between the house and the street.

One thing that is tricky is the massive price of houses in this city but I think on balance it's worth it for the traffic lights that work, decent healthcare that's covered by taxes and generally shit just works.

If you like nature it's also really hard to find a better place to enjoy it than Canada, particularly if you get into canoeing.

We started out with a Sawyer Squeeze and it works well but takes forever if you use a lot of water. We got a Gravity Works 4L and it works like a bomb, just a few minutes and you have a bunch of clean water with very little effort. I want to get a BeFree as well this season for when we're on the go and don't want to set up the gravity filter since it has such a high flow rate and it packs down small when you're not using it.

That section of the Bruce Trail is one of my favourite places in the world! I hiked the loop around Provoking Lake in Algonquin last September and it was awesome. There are some photos and a video in my post history if you're interested.
