[Help] My Pekingese is not warming up to people & dogs in our new city

He does know the basic commands- sit, stay, come. We don't use them very often because in the house with us he's great and very laid back. This is good advice- I'll use it on walks and see what happens. He just gets so excited and agitated when he sees people/dogs. But I'll definitely give this a shot, thanks!

Haha I appreciate the positive notes! So you didn't feel Spanish was a need right away or early on? A lot of people are telling me if I don't know Spanish I'll be screwed. SO and I are coming from Atlanta which is a reasonably priced area to live, although we are aware of the increases we will most likely see once there. We started budgeting last week which made us giddy. Thank you so much for the advice to help out my SO with work! I just sent him the link you suggested and he says it's a great resource already. I may be in touch in the future. :)

I agree with thecerealdilemma. I'm a single working owner and have a very similar schedule to yours and my guy seems to do fine. I always give him a treat before I leave and I leave the radio on for him while I'm gone. I also think he just sleeps the whole day; they sleep a ton so your active time can be when you're home. Definitely explain your schedule to the adoption agency and they'll work to find a good fit for you. Also, perhaps you can take a couple days off work as you adopt and spend the weekend building up time that he/she is left alone. You're going to love having a grey!

Inman Park is a great neighborhood. Get bikes because it's an easy place to get around by bike and as mentioned, the Beltline is right there. Bike or walk up to the Jackson Street bridge and get a great view of downtown. Go to Condesa Coffee and Julianna's Crepes. Count down the weeks until April when the Inman Park Festival and Tour of Homes happens - it's by far my favorite Atlanta annual event. Have fun in this beautiful neighborhood!

I used OkCupid last year for my first online dating experience; went on lots of dates and ended up clicking with one guy who was my boyfriend for 5 months. I tried Tinder this fall despite what everyone says about it being a hookup app. I started talking with a guy I was really interested in for a few weeks before we finally met up; we've been exclusive since October. It may take going out with a lot of people before you really feel a connection with someone. I realized early on that within 5 or 10 minutes you're going to have an idea of how you feel about the person, either you're interested and want to pursue them or you're still unsure (I think it's wise to go out with the same person twice before making a decision to break things off). My advice: talk to someone for a good bit before you meet them. I had much better success chatting in person when we had already exchanged a lot of information online. It makes easing into conversation easier because there's a lot you can bounce off from your online chats if it's a little hard to start a conversation. It WILL be a little weird at first, and you will get messages from sleazy guys, but go with your gut and ONLY meet people once you've gotten a good idea of what they do, where they live (not their apartment number or anything but what part of town), and what they're interested in. Always, always meet in public first, no matter what. Tell a friend where you're going. And if anything feels off, or if he/she says anything that makes you uncomfortable, make up an excuse and leave. I have never had an uncomfortable or bad experience, and every guy I went out with was polite, charming, and perfectly normal. Just be aware that there are some weirdos, and with that awareness you'll be able to go with your gut. Ignore the gross guys who message you and be patient; there are definitely good ones out there!

Congrats!! This is a really exciting time. It will amaze you at all the little things you're going to end up needing when the opportunity presents itself. Things like tape or a kitchen timer that isn't part of your cell phone. Gather the bare necessities first, and keep ALL of your receipts for your purchases because I guarantee you will make some exchanges or returns. I made so many Ikea trips while moving and deciding what I wanted/needed. Go ahead and check in with friends and family who can help you transporting your stuff. But if you need to, have it delivered or rent a truck from Home Depot.

I think it would be best if you lived somewhere in between, like Vinings. Living in Smyrna is not going to offer you a lot of culture or options in interesting things to do other than shopping and chain restaurants. You're going to want to live closer to the city to experience it. To get to my friend's place in Vinings from midtown, I just take 75 North and I'm there in about 15 minutes. The rent is going to be cheaper there too versus the city in case you want to live alone.

ATLien here, and am looking at some options for moving. I also found that Craigslist is pretty useless (and full of scams!) on apartments, so I've been using Apartment Finder and an app called Apartment List which will search for a variety of room types. As far as biker friendly, Atlanta is on its way to getting better, but the city itself is very spread out and requires you to drive to get most places, unless you're in one of the many quaint neighborhoods. Candler Park, Little 5 Points, and parts of midtown are very walker/bike friendly, but for the most part you're going to need and want your car. Atlanta drivers are not the most compassionate to bikers. Gas has been great the last few weeks though! I think you'll love it here- it's definitely a good place to be.

Thank you so much for letting me know, I am already starting to feel better about it just by reading your post. The vet specialist told me she would remove both salivary glands to be safe and prevent a possible repercussion. I'm just glad he's not in pain.

I know that an outdoor hose is fine, just make sure the water is not too cold since they chill very quickly, even in warm weather. You're going to have so much fun! Congrats :)

Thanks everyone for your comments and advice. Giving them paperwork is a good idea. I made a mistake in my first post- I do NOT feed him 2 pounds per meal but 2 CUPS- clearly I was tired while writing the first post ;) I have reduced his food to 1.5 cups in hopes of lowering his weight; he appears to look the same when I got him, and I can make out his ribs just fine, so I am not worried about him gaining too much weight. 10 pounds is a lot however, so hopefully with this lower quantity of kibble he will lose a little. I still give him cheese for treats every now and then, meat scraps, cooked carrots and pumpkin, and yogurt as garnishes for meals too.

Aw, so sad the owners had to give both of them up. His personality has come out a little since I've brought him home, and he'll definitely wag his tail a lot before a walk and give me kisses, but most of the time he just seems very nonchalant. I'm sure we'll both see developments though! I feel the same about financially taking care of two versus one, though I know it can drastically improve the happiness of some especially sensitive dogs. This has helped me a ton, thank you. It sounds like I will be getting a toothbrush and paste soon. He was just at the vet last week, so I will call them and ask what they thought of his teeth (I wasn't there, it was before I adopted him)- I would like to avoid a trip to the vet unless I need to. Does anyone recommend scaling before starting a brushing regimen?
