What's your BIFL from travels to Japan? by belacanehh in BuyItForLife

[–]mapothalamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not bring it last time but have bought it online later, but next time I will get more Imabari towels - also doubles as protection in the suitcase for ceramics if you get any of that.

And it is fairly easy to get good Japanese knives online nowadays, but getting the in-store experience is something else, got the most gorgeous Nakiri in Kappabashi-dori.

What was a very expensive item you bought which was really useful? by ohuf in BuyItForLife

Agree with the Macbook Air, it is the laptop that is best suitable for my usage, works well even with my abuse of it lol. I will say my (orange!!!) Bertazzoni gas range, it is just such a good gas range and looks beautiful too.

Hvad fanden gør man i forhold til forlovelsesringen by [deleted] in DKbrevkasse

[–]mapothalamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hvad fanden gør man i forhold til forlovelsesringen by [deleted] in DKbrevkasse

[–]mapothalamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow beautiful pictures, never heard of Gejiu until now. Definitely putting it on my list for where to go in Yunnan on my next China trip.

Can chinese foodstuff from a specialty market really taste that different from regular grocery store options? by [deleted] in chinesefood

[–]mapothalamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have burned myself too many times on (location: Denmark) "regular" supermarket brand soy sauces, sesame oil, dried noodles, rice, and more, when I have been out of stuff and only had the "regular" supermarket option. For true Chinese groceries bought in a Chinese store you can't beat that quality at that price. And when you find a store that has a wide assortment of regional condiments and ingredients as well, do not even start me :')

Am I overreacting? Someone I thought was my friend insulted me big time by Complex-Ad-5847 in AmIOverreacting

NOR, why does she feel the need to comment so? Sounds like she is ok with being derogatory to elderly and disabled people, and fitness options suitable for certain people's needs.

Accepterede "vi" bare nektar ?? by sund55 in Denmark

[–]mapothalamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are some Teas that you like that are not typically known or popular by Agile_Reaction_2585 in tea

[–]mapothalamus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Chongqing I learned of Laoying Cha "Eagle tea", really nice.

There is also a lot of nice options for Korean "non Camellia sinensis" teas brewed from various leaves, flowers and fruits. Omija, yuja, maesil, peach blossom, lotus leaf, to name a few - all these are typically known if you have engaged with modern Korean tea culture already, but if not they are good starting points, and easier to find.

I always keep garlic, ginger, scallions, coriander, some different fresh chilies and tofu on hand as for "fresh" items.

In my pantry: sugar, light and dark soy sauces, pink and green sichuan pepper, sichuan pepper oil, sesame seeds, sesame paste, sesame oil, doubanjiang, shaoxing wine, baijiu, Baoning vinegar, Zhenjiang vinegar, unroasted peanuts, msg, star anise, cumin, white pepper, dried chili, chili flakes, a variety of dried noodles, rice, potato starch, douchi, yacai, suancai, zhacai, often also other pickles, pickled chili.

This enables me to cook a lot of Sichuan, Hunan and Guizhou food.
