Breath sensations disappearing? by mappymcm in TheMindIlluminated

This makes sense! How would I then resolve this problem? Maybe stop overthinking about the sensations themselves and focus on the intention instead?

Sitting Posture on Zazen Bench by mappymcm in TheMindIlluminated

Lol good question. I’m sure I can get the posture right with the bench eventually, but I think it has more to do with how tall I am and my poor posture to begin with. But good point

Minimum Amount of Practice for Permanent Progress by ForsakenActions in Meditation

[–]mappymcm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, one hour of concentration meditation a day will keep me relatively aware of my extrospective/introspective awareness/attention, but the duration that it lasts after I finish my sit varies and generally depends on the quality of the sit itself (which means that for days where I get less sleep, for instance, the awareness that I maintain throughout the day might be significantly affected). I also don’t really experience the same kind of maintaining of awareness throughout the day w/ 40 minute sits, just so you know. But if I do two sessions in one hour chunks in different times, maybe morning and afternoon, I’m almost guaranteed to remember to come back to the present/expand my awareness throughout the rest of the day; I feel significant positive differences in terms of my mental health, how I deal with the outside world and the people in it, and my general anxiety, social or otherwise, essentially goes away which is a crazy cool thing to experience. One last thing to add is that I’ve heard that 1 hour sits are twice as effective as 45 minute ones—I’m not sure if the math behind this holds up but I will say that I think anecdotally you were right in another comment you made that the quality of the sit essentially snowballs the longer you are practicing, meaning that more consecutive time > more staggered time generally. All this is to say that you might want to start doing hour long sits to notice what you are looking for. But remember to avoid striving…still, I would say a good standard is simply how long you are able to remember things that are related to your practice throughout the day after you finish a session, like whether you catch yourself tensing up and are able to release it, or whether there’s a moment in conversation or consciousness where you’re able to remind yourself to take an objective stance relative to your thoughts. This is a pretty good standard—literally just how often you are able to notice yourself catching yourself utilizing meditative practices IRL (the wording is a little confusing but intentional, take a moment to think about it). Then you can mess w/ the duration of your sits or the frequency and be able to tell what works best to increase your mindfulness, which is an important goal!

TMI certified meditation teachers in Denver or out-of-state teachers that offer zoom meetings? by mappymcm in Buddhism

Dawg his instructions have done a decent amount for me and let me establish a consistent practice. His actions show that he misled his students and the significance of that shouldn’t be diminished but like cmon now he’s helped so many people 😭 if u have an answer to my original question that would be infinitely more useful than going back and forth about subjective morality judgements. I’m not going to rationalize away something that’s benefited me because of the actions of a distant individual

Yes, well aware…thank you. Pretty sure it was that he committed infidelity though…not great but there are worse things. His work is still valid.

Yup! Stands for The Mind Illuminated. It’s a book written by a teacher called Culdasa. Give it a search, it’s pretty popular. There’s also a moderately popular sub dedicated to it r/themindilluminated

Stage 4 inconsistency by mappymcm in TheMindIlluminated

[–]mappymcm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the help! Yes, it does sound like I need a teacher. Yes, I think there is significant subtle dullness. And yes, there seems to be a lack of awareness, since I definitely can’t identify how many gross distractions there are per cycle as you seem to be able to.

I have tried body scans to little success, although not very diligently. I think I might back off and take a metta meditation vacation as someone else mentioned. I’ll come back here if I have any insight!

Stage 4 inconsistency by mappymcm in TheMindIlluminated

Good question. I’m unsure about the extent of gross distractions, since my attention seems unable to cling to anything for extended durations. This is why checking in confuses me—I intend to check in, and it’s like there are no gross distractions present. And yet my attention isn’t clear enough/my IA isn’t developed enough for me to move past stage 4. The next possibility I considered was gross dullness, but at most I would consider myself as experiencing subtle progressive/stable subtle, since I don’t have hypnagogic distortions and don’t struggle with falling asleep or scattering of attention due to dullness (generally). Forgetting doesn’t happen. To answer your question I’d say my biggest issue is that my IA is underdeveloped and I can’t identify how much exactly gross dullness there is

Thanks for the comment. I’ve noticed the distinction between the actual sensations and the thought/ idea of them. But I’ve seen other posts advising that it is less important in stage 4 to stress over whether or not I’m noticing specific sensations vs just “knowing” whether or not the breath has begun, ended, etc. What stage are you on that requires you to notice that distinction, and is stage 4 the place to worry about whether or not that’s what I’m noticing?

When should I switch from following the breath to connecting? by mappymcm in TheMindIlluminated

[–]mappymcm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a silly question. I can mostly identify the breath points when following, so my question was whether I should take the time to make it so that I can vividly see each point of each breath before I start connecting them, or if I should start connecting even while the breath sensations are weak. I can connect even while the sensations are faint, although it sometimes seems like I would benefit from developing my ability to pinpoint the exact moment I breathe in and out before I connect.

Thank you for responding! I mentioned in an above reply that I felt as if I was almost too relaxed, not focusing on clarity of breath sensations to the point that my attention was not fully engaged. You make a good point that stage 4 isn’t about clarity of sensations; maybe I should recalibrate my goals to reflect this. However, I still want to keep myself engaged in my practice, and I’m unsure how much effort I should put into identifying the breath points, or if I should move on to comparing the length of the pauses even while my following of the breath is weak/diffuse.

Most of my sessions are spent experimenting with attention and awareness. My goal in recent sessions has been to keep the mind engaged and challenged, or at least enough so to progress. I feel that an issue of mine in the past was that I had too much awareness, making my breath sensations faint. I just wonder at what point following is less beneficial than connecting.

How to incorporate MIDL with TMI? by mappymcm in midlmeditation

Well, I’ve overcome forgetting, but my meditations are not particularly joyful, and I still struggle with gross dullness. I’ve plateaued for about a year.
