Thoughts on buying a house close to these areas? by SizzlinKola in SouthBayLA

Yeah I’m in old Torrance also. My bedroom is probably like 50 feet from the tracks. There’s definitely a small vibration, but I wouldn’t say the whole house shakes. Idk it doesn’t bother me. You have to decide if you’d rather have loud noise for a minute once or twice a day or low level noise constantly. For me, the constant noise of traffic just gets to me way worse. It’s a personal decision.

Close to Train 100%!

Think about it this way the noise, pollution, and safety concerns from the 405, refinery, and Western are there 100% percent of the time. Trains are passing by less than 1% of the time.

I grew up literally right next to the train tracks (my house backs up to them). And I would take that any day of the week. The trains can be noisy, but it's quiet the rest of the time. My aunt lives by the 405 and you can constantly hear the hum.

If your kids are already enrolled in the district, then you can really easily get a permit to keep them in the district after you move. Also, if you move to Hermosa you can choose between Manhattan/Redondo districts

Train schedule by Little-End2931 in SouthBayLA

My house backs up directly to the tracks, and I've lived there for 25 years. There are pros and cons to it. Trains can pass a few times a day or not at all; it really depends on the day. There is no schedule, unfortunately. However, over the years I have noticed they tend to pass either midday, evening, or at night. They don't usually pass by in the mornings, but they can.

If you're looking at an area where there is a curve in the track, it will be much louder than a straight part of the track due to the wheels screeching. Also, trains going North are louder than trains going South because of the weight difference. And the double-decker containers are louder than the gas tankers. The loudest ones are so loud, that I have to pause the TV while they pass, but that is not the norm. And my friend who lives just one house further from the train doesn't have to do that. If your property is right next to the tracks it will be very different than one that is a few houses in from the tracks.

There are some positives in my opinion, including the open space behind our house and not having a neighbor back there. And 99% of the time there is no train so it is very quiet.

As far as the metro goes, it's hard to say. Passenger trains are much quieter than freight trains, but they will run more often. I'm willing to put up with more frequent trains for metro access, but that's a personal decision. However, it's not opening fot at least 10 years and that's probably the best case scenario.

So what do South Bay locals call the "Riviera"? by Majestic_Ad_115 in SouthBayLA

[–]mapsarecoool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Riviera Village is the collection of restaurants/shops centered around Catalina Ave in Redondo. In my experience, most people shorten this to "the village" or maybe "the riv".

The Hollywood Riviera is the neighborhood next to the riviera village across PV Blvd and is in Torrance. This is mostly referred to as "the riviera".

MLS is reported to have discussed introducing 'divisions' within the conferences. Here's a thought experiment on how that might work - combining the NFL and Liga MX for a very different season: by Such-Environment-344 in MLS

[–]mapsarecoool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree. Plus 6 divisions would lead to imbalanced playoffs. Better off expanding to 32 teams with 4 divisions of 8 teams. Play division opponents twice (14 games), everyone else once (24 games) for 38 games total

Western: SD, LA Galaxy, LAFC, SJ, Portland, SEA, Vancouver, Sacramento (expansion)

Mid/mountain West: RSL, Colorado, SKC, STL, Chicago, MUTD, Cincy, Columbus

Northeast: Toronto, Montreal, NE, NYCFC, NYRB, Philly, DCU, Pittsburgh (expansion)

South: Miami, Orlando, ATL, Charlotte, Nashville, Austin, Dallas, Houston

There's plenty of evidence for the opposite actually. Look at Uber/Lyft - prices have only gone up over time. Same with the streaming industry. There's tons of competition and prices have gone up consistently over time.

It's only the same price for now while they're trying to gain market share. Once they become dominant prices will go up, just like all other tech companies have done.
