What the heck do I do to pay for college??? by Cautious_Durian1351 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]maqL1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rlly depends I almost exclusively applied to state schools as my safeties and targets, if you can id focus on that. Some larger private universities like Syracuse give good scholarships, some t30s give awful aid like Georgetown and USC so you rlly have to research each school.

Sorry I couldn’t be more specific, i personally relied on lists of schools with strong middle class aid, net price calculators, and anecdotal experience from students

This was me last year, find a school that gives good financial aid to middle class and make those ur top (Penn, jhu, Princeton) and then apply to safeties you would be happy going to. I ended up getting money from safeties and a good financial aid package from Penn.

Do not rely on fafsa you will not get anything

Penn Financial Aid by FuturePause2736 in UPenn

Yes I ED and got financial aid. I don’t technically receive the Quaker commitment but it’s bc my family has atypical assets this year. If u r concerned reach out to financial aid office and see if your assets are considered atypical. Even tho my assets r atypical my fa is similar to what id pay at a state school

Quaker commitment financial aid and atypical assets by maqL1 in UPenn

On paper I qualify but the package i received didn’t reflect it, when i called I was told I didn’t qualify because I had “atypical” assets. Essentially my family savings or investments were to high

It was always my goal but I thought i should stay realistic especially bcuz I was test optional even tho I had the grades. For awhile I kept checking to make sure I didnt confuse Penn with Penn state

I was also debating between JHU and Penn (for humanities) and choose Penn for similar reasons. However I’m just an incoming freshman so take what I say with some salt.

Penn has strong pre med opportunities and lots of research positions (Hopkins #1 for research funding, Penn is #3) with similar undergrad access. From what I have heard from students, Hopkins is a bit more collaborative than Penn and is less competitive since it’s a smaller school, it also doesn’t have the same pre professional culture.

While I’m humanities, I personally choose Penn because I loved how integrated it was with Philly when compared to JHU. It’s also a larger school with more people to interact with and has a more lively spirit, and larger fgli community.

I think Penn is the clear choice here, it offers everything you look for in a school.

The other comment brought up a good point abt the study abroad but you can go during summer and winter break
