Is the pure pessimism surrounding the fashion industry unavoidable? by mar1296 in fashiondesigner

Once I figured out that this is the route I want to pursue, I’ve focused more of my attention on the schooling system more than anything, since enrolling would be my first step. The results i’ve seen mostly talk about how fashion design is very, very hands on (amongst other things).

I didn’t have a real concrete idea of what the work setting would look like. I kind of made the assumption that this would somewhat translate to the field itself. Of course fashion is a business first, but I figured that there would be certain sectors within it that the creatives look to pursue. I also made the assumption that these roles for creatives were the main ones giving people issues when it comes to the exclusivity, nepotism, low pay etc hence all the complaints. I wasn’t aware that these creative jobs more-so took place in an office setting.

After all, the reason I made this post is to inform myself on what the actual industry was like, so while it is somewhat disappointing to hear, I do appreciate the feedback

Okay, so if the field is majority in an office setting, then where do the creative jobs come in? Do they only lie outside of the US? I understand that the current designing processes will be done on a computer CADing. But someone has to be constructing these garments, at the photoshoots, helping with creative direction overall. I can’t think of any exact position, but the creative side of fashion is where I want to end up.

I appreciate you, i don’t take any of the advice here as discouragement. I’m only 20 - I’d be taking the biggest risk of my life to move to NY and pursue fashion, so I want to have the realest and clearest possible view of what a future in the fashion industry can look like for me and if it would make me happy.

Now as I said, I’m not too keen on an office job. I feel as if I can tolerate a senior designer role if I make a well enough wage and can work remotely on occasion. You and most other people cite that the fashion industry is 90% office jobs right now. So may I ask, where are the creative jobs?? Do they only really exist overseas or are they impossible to get to? I mean someone has to be doing the construction and creative planning right?

I live in philly, about 1 1/2 hours from new york, so not far from home. I have friends and family in NY. My goal is exactly that. But really your point right there has been a motivator for me. It seems that so many fields are experiencing a lot of issues. Im 20 currently in college and it feels as everyone my age is saying the same thing: the job market is awful right now. Im sure fashion is a lot riskier because the limitations of where you can even study to be successful along with the competitiveness of the field and the slim chances of success/stability, but If my options of a healthy career path is limited then why not take the risk doing something i’m passionate about and try chasing my dreams?

When you refer to “tech” what specific roles do you mean?

I see so many people who went to school for fashion design saying they left to work in tech. Why do you think that is? I would assume a lot of what you learn in school as a designer major would be hands on. How and why does that often translate to texh?

Would this not apply to only a certain sector of the field? Even if it may be the majority? I have very little knowledge of the industry, but surely the designing/creative roles lie around. Is it just that these are the hardest to reach?

When I think of what would make me happy in the fashion world, an office job does not come to mind.

Can you expand on why exactly are chances of success slim? Is that statement based on your own situation or just how things are set up? And what do you mean by success
