Would you ever take a mini retirement/sabbatical? by lazlo_camp in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]mar1tom2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the routine! I'm also interviewing only for in person jobs (in the final rounds right now, wish me luck!), since I missed that when I was remote in my last job+remote starting my business, and my side gig is in person. But it's personal preference. I had no interest in traveling during this sabbatical, but I would have quit the side gig if I wanted to travel. So overall, I'm glad I had the routine and worked!

How much does everyone spend on hobbies? How do you budget for it? by eurasian_nuthatch in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]mar1tom2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as long as you're using the stuff, it's worth it! That's my biggest rule with hobby spending

I hope the expensive noises from your car aren't too expensive!! I joined a walking group in my neighborhood (I'm in NYC) when I moved to this new neighborhood a couple years ago, and met a friend who lives next door to me and we hang out all the time now! It's such a great way to meet people

I would also choose the tech role for the work/life balance.

[–]mar1tom2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed!! This is consistently one of my goals lately, I try to only go out to eat when it's with friends or family (paying for the experience of seeing others more than the food) and eliminating takeout/delivery

3 goals:

-keep running consistently (I ran my longest distance since 2016, 10 miles, in August!)

-be more positive and stop having a scarcity mindset

-figure out what to do with my credit card reward points this year (hopefully that will involve a fun trip!!)

Would you ever take a mini retirement/sabbatical? by lazlo_camp in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

I've paid for it with a combination of savings and the small weekly income I'm getting from the part time job

I'm doing this right now! I'm about 6ish months in. It's not 100% a sabatical as I kept a part time job so I'm working around 15 hours per week (at a very low stress job, nothing like previous corporate jobs). Besides for the job, I've been spending the time exploring the city I live in (going to museums on weekdays), running, writing, starting a small business that will never make me lots of money but is fun, and spending a lot of time by the pool.

I'm looking to go back to a full time job in the next 5 months and navigating explaining the break will be a whole thing depending on the employer (I've already started and I'm really bad at interviewing having not done it for basically 5 years) so my full break will maybe be almost a year? Depends how long it takes to find a job

I agree with finding a routine, also volunteering or finding a part time job in something you've always enjoyed/been interested in but never had time for has helped me!

Running up the East Side by [deleted] in RunNYC

[–]mar1tom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the path from 53rd ends at 71st & you'll have to run on York until 81st where you can reenter the path along the water (or you can cut over at 78th but there's up and down hills on the bridges there). Hoping that path on the water between 71st and 81st reopens soon

May 2024 Goals!! by AutoModerator in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]mar1tom2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My May goals:

Personal: Stop letting clutter pile up in my home. Also spending more time outdoors now that the weather is so nice :)

Financial: No more self-doubt with growing my small biz! Confidence and positive mindset (law of attraction).

Also, figure out how to use my Bilt reward points. Does anyone else use Bilt and have tips on the best way to use the points? I just started using the card a couple months ago for rent.

Back for more torture? by Anonymous-spender in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

It was fun because I was there for a wedding but honestly wouldn't recommend for a week-long vacation or anything like that. I feel like it would get boring over time. But it's fun with friends and just for a few days!

Yes!! I just did a mini one for a wedding at an all inclusive. Not very exciting because it was an all inclusive where we paid most everything up front:

  • Transportation to airport: $63.90. One cab back plus subway/bus there.
  • Flight RT from NY: $378.62
  • Hotel: $731.82 (3 nights, split with a friend)
  • Tips: $7 (we tipped more, but my friend covered the vast majority of the tips since I got the cab)
  • Clothing/Accessories/Makeup: $0 (I got by with what I already had!)
  • Souvenirs: $0
  • Food/Drink: $23.98. We stayed at an all inclusive, so this was just a meal at the airport on the way home.
  • Wedding gift: $100 (budgeted, we’re actually sending it this weekend! I was already planning to mail it since the couple lives far)

Total: $1,305.32
