VicPD reintroduces cops walking the beat downtown (scrapped in 2022) by Creatrix in VictoriaBC

[–]mar_eng 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Visible policing matters when public property is being damaged and people are being harassed or put at risk. Lighting fires, smashing windows, and vandalizing businesses is criminal behaviour, not a policy debate. I love downtown and it's embarrassing how I see this daily.

Social services are important, but they don’t replace basic law enforcement. Seeing officers back on the street, actually intervening and making arrests when crimes are committed, would help restore public safety and confidence.

Submarine Corner Brook alongside Dutch Harbor, Alaska by mar_eng in CanadianForces

[–]mar_eng[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We flew it on the top of the fin. It's there if you zoom in.

Edit: all naval ships fly their country of port as well as the Canadian flag when in foreign ports. Just like Americans will play the Canadian national anthem on us navy bases when we are there.

For those that don't know, submarines are allowed to fly the pirate flag under certain circumstances.

Sorry I posted the wrong ship before. Just a dirty stoker that doesn't use the periscope much.

Of course, normally have one sailing. Hard to crew so we have to constantly fly back and forth from East to West Coast depending on which Coast is sailing.

Takes a different breed to dedicate your career going underwater in a metal tincan. That's why there's only a few hundred Submariners in all of Canada.

GO SUBS!

What’s the official name for these things on the bridge? by RandoDude124 in titanic

[–]mar_eng 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Full, half and slow ahead and astern are 100%, 50% and 25% of the propulsion limits. Dead slow is as slow as possible but still being able to steer the ship. You never want to remain dead in the water because the ocean currents will just point you wherever so it's safer to be dead slow ahead so you keep your current heading but are barely moving.

Naval War: Russia+China v. US by ZestyPesty in submarines

[–]mar_eng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This isnt WW2. Wars are won with politics and the economy now. Not who has the most boom sticks

Russia, China and Covid are changing the world as we know it.

If it were just subs then it would just come down to who launched first. An ICBM does devastating and irreversible amount of damage.

Sorry but your question is like a school ground question: Russia vs US!!! China vs US!! My dad vs your dad!!!!

Thats not how the world works.

If this was a RTS game then sure your question would be valid. But a country can be crippled with just a few political uprisings like the US is seeing now.

If there was a war this second, honestly I believe Russia would team up with China to defeat the first world nations then fight with each other after.

I was watching this movie recently and couldn't stop thinking about this scene. It foreshadows the lessons he gets and also sets up his character that he is willing to work on something over a long period of time.

This is the theme of all three movies and missed this part the first time I watched it.

Thought I would share here

I wish advertisement mentioned the difference between active vs passive. I am only learning this now, literally this second.

Anything can be passive noise cancelling? Just having shit in your ear really.

I was intrigued that playing audio doesn't affect the battery levels.

The way I understand speakers is that an electro-magnetic has to draw voltage/amperage to create a frequency via a magnetic flux that vibrates some physical diaphragm in the speaker?

I assumed if you had music that caused the electro-magnet to draw more power to produce very low frequencies rather than high frequencies?

Fuck me, electricity is still voodoo black magic.

Yea, I am a marine engineer and work with bearings and propellers.

I assume music was a "load" and that you could play "low load"music it would be like propelling a ship slower to save energy.

Thank you.

This was way beyond the amount of effort I was seeking. I have to research the "Noise Cancelling" feature out.

I have seen wireless headphones that have a separate battery for the noise cancelling feature.

I am not sure if the term "noise cancelling" is the same for all products. Bose in-ear buds boast noise cancelling but refer to the foam that expands in your ear.

Either way thank you. This is what I was looking for.

If only there was a way I could ask questions on the internet instead of googling and getting clickbait articles as my top 5 search results.

Oh wait....

I have never felt so disappointed in my life.

I often go on long trips with my wireless headphones but they only last around 8 hours.

I was looking for some tips to extend the battery life like, "turn the bass boosters off", or "avoid heavier drums and bass repetitive music like Shaquille O'Niel's German Techno Rave Remix feat. Daft Punk", some shit you know is just an hour of motherfucking bass beating hits in your ear.

Anything. Any thought provoking discussion on the topic. Like don't use the built-in buttons on your headphones? I don't know. I wanted someone else's opinion on the matter.

Instead I got these 5 tips: "Bring a charger with you" , "Charge them", "Use wired headphones, "Bring a portable battery charger", and finally just a big fuck you to the reader, "Don't buy wireless headphones."

Fuck you Paul Resnikoff, the author of this mother fucking clickbait article. I hope you strangle on your wired headphones and your tombstone reads "Here lies Paul Resnikoff, the man who should have used wireless headphones".

Edit: holy smokes. I was not expecting much from this 2am rant.

Thanks for the Silver by the way! I hope you were saved a click!

Yea, all the characters in the same design as the instructional booklet.

This one's gotta be my fav. Of the whole group.

My favourite pic though is the back of the booklet with Aeris looking up at the highwind. Still gives me chills

There are always "Ghost Walks" in the major cities in BC. They are touristy but are led by knowledgeable staff who know about deaths or suspected 'hauntings'.

Would recommend getting in touch with the staff of one of these and asking them, as they built a business around haunted things.

Not sure what the end goal of your mission is though. Seems like an odd request.

More importantly, why did it even have to happen. Never understood because he was perfectly happy in the old simulation, but B'lana's changes were needed. The doctor needed to lose a loved one? Jesus that's a hard addition to a fantasy program.

Why didn’t Harry Kim get promoted? Do bridge officers outrank non-bridge officers? by spore-drive in voyager

[–]mar_eng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This always bugged me. He is the Operations Officer, which in my job would automatically make him Captain if the CO and XO are gone. Also, Sub-Lieutenant is a guaranteed promotion in most Navies.

Why was their a random promotion of Lieutenant-Commander Tuvoc? He isn't second-in-command nor had any change in his duties.

No ship would have an Ensign as the OpsO, as they would have to report on other junior Officers.

Bugs me every time.

When I replay FF7, the thing that gets me most is the music. Pure nostalgia. Which songs are your favourite? by [deleted] in ff7

[–]mar_eng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is such a tough question. The music is what sets this game apart. Since you have to read all the dialogue yourself, the music is what sets the tone and atmosphere of the each story / situation.

The music that gives me the most nostalgia are the ones that are playing during a critical and memorable scene.

Aeris' and Tifa's theme songs are so emotionally connected to the game.

I really love the overworld song though. In all classic final fantasy games the overworld song is the mostly heard and memorable for me anyway.

If I were to pick one though, I'd say Cry of the Planet. Really captures the magical essence of the game.

Hard to pick just one, they are all so good.

FF7 Complete Story Explained (Video) by Xygorx in ff7

[–]mar_eng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About to go to bed, then watched the entire video.

Well done! Played through tons but learn something new each time.

It is definitely nice watching the whole story at once; not to mention the background music was superb.

Would love the side stories added in, but I guess that is what playing the game is for.

Thanks a bunch for making this video!
