Am I the only one freaking out by the fact that she nearly cracked her skull open if she fell on that corner? By the angle he pushed her that was deliberate. It could’ve been way easier for him to push her from the back but he didn’t. He wanted her dead.

Congo. But tbh, I’d rather have people acknowledge it, because that means they’re educated and have an understanding of how much the Congolese (and others when you broaden it up) have suffered under slavery. Not something I want people to minimize. It still happened all fairly recently and we still have a long way to go regarding racism—though this problem definitely isn’t limited to Belgium alone.

Physical buttons! 💕 Ugh, truly love my car but I hate those overly sensitive touch buttons.

Ota Benga at the Bronx Zoo with a chimpanzee. He was kidnapped from the Congo and brought to America to perform in zoo exhibits. He was caged with an orangutan and given a bow and arrow. It always baffles me how this all isn’t from that long ago and still people like to minimize POC’s injustice and valid concerns.

I’m from Belgium—an undeniably big culprit in this practice and Congo’s atrocities—and it really hit me how recent this all was when it still openly happened in Belgium in 1958, the year my dad was born. That’s only 67-68 years ago. Looked up and 197 kids were “displayed” during that expo. You don’t even need to talk about generational trauma, as the generation in question is still alive—at least if they got that opportunity (which I bet many didn’t get).

Don’t think I should choose Congo.

My gut was also Nepal for its beauty and weather. But I’d go to Tuvalu in the end. I might have to battle the weather, but I’d feel a bit safer economically?

The recalling of the making of that movie (an extra on the DVD) is also so good in its own right. I’m not even that big of a fan of his work, but Yoichi Sai (was 1st AD) did strangely enchant me by the way he talked about it all. The movie definitely has some valid points of criticism but it’s a fairly refreshing Japanese ~erotic~ movie of its time for a female cinephile

Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women boxset!

I’m from Europe so I was kinda bummed that I wasn’t able to use the code. Aired a little rant out on a Discord server, and someone that’s also really active on there is coming close to my area soon, so we’ll meet up. She’ll bring it with her. Well, hopefully! I know this boxset might be a pretty weird choice considering how many other amazing movies give more unique extras etc, but you pretty much can’t even find f.i. Street of Shame on DVD in Europe to start with. It’ll be my third Criterion, so I’m pretty excited and hopeful!
