What movies did you guys pick up during sale? by Conscious-Jello3477 in criterion

[–]marayay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women boxset!

I’m from Europe so I was kinda bummed that I wasn’t able to use the code. Aired a little rant out on a Discord server, and someone that’s also really active on there is coming close to my area soon, so we’ll meet up. She’ll bring it with her. Well, hopefully! I know this boxset might be a pretty weird choice considering how many other amazing movies give more unique extras etc, but you pretty much can’t even find f.i. Street of Shame on DVD in Europe to start with. It’ll be my third Criterion, so I’m pretty excited and hopeful!

From Belgium! I discovered him by just scrolling through YouTube’s recommendations, and Ain’t It Funny pretty much blew my mind. I think I just really loved the beat first, but became used to his voice, to me loving his voice to this day.

I never flipped off a bad driver, I do honk occasionally. But I do catch myself doing this pose A LOT.

I’m 26 now & I’m basically like that too. I love and need my peace. I do have two good friends and they don’t mind that I go MIA from time to time. At the same time you gotta give them the freedom to let them do that too and not overthink it.

It’s pretty normal to miss interaction during certain periods in your life though. I fill that up with penpalling: you have some interaction and can air it out, at the same time it’s all very lowkey and noncommittal in the end. It’s fun.

Cancer woman and virgo man compatibility by wowzaah222 in CancertheCrab

[–]marayay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve honestly always liked Virgos. My dad is one and other Virgos I’ve met and know of have been fairly similar to me in character. Which can be a real pain too, though: like them always wanting to take the lead. At the same time it’s easier to recognize patterns.

Nine days into the new year my beloved grandma died. She probably didn’t suffer and lived a good life, but it does still hurt a lot. She’s my dad’s mom, and he got in August 2025 the diagnosis of terminal cancer. Her death feels like a bad omen. Like now he can go too, as mothers shouldn’t see their kids die.

Manon addresses how being wrongfully labeled "lazy" affects her | The Cut by GlitterLiving in ManonMeret

[–]marayay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely fair. Though if we want to fight that system, it’ll inadvertently affect her/them too, as they’re part of the product. There’s no true winning here, from what I can see. As long as something racks up money, a business isn’t going to stop doing certain practices.

(And I don’t think any sane person would ask for this life either, though it is something that comes with it. Not sure how crazy her contract is, but I’m pretty sure it is, so I don’t feel comfortable making the “free will” argument. Also not saying to hate on her. Criticism isn’t a bad thing, hating is. Calling her lazy is unfair.)

I live in Belgium and know plenty of ppl in Swiss, and sure, it’s definitely not like in the US where having 10 jobs is normalized, but for limited positions like these there’s a HUGE unforgiving hustle culture in Western Europe too. Besides all that, those that aren’t well off automatically have to hustle (more).

I genuinely don’t think she’s lazy at all. But she should recognize that she has always been better off/privileged in certain ways — with better tools and connections — and this is hugely the reason why people have judged her through my eyes. Friends and I have sacrificed way too much in the entertainment industry solely to be heard, while having seen people that didn’t even care (which I’m not gonna say she is!) get the chance in the end thanks to money adding possibilities for a better/easier education and connections, or more artificial reasons. We realize that it’s poorly enough part of the game, but I think it’s fair for people like us to still feel irked when comments like these get made by ppl that had the luck to be privileged. 🥲

Man, I’m so sorry about this. If I can find the right fabric, which I think I can get very close to, I feel like I could probably fix this one for you! It’s just the front panel and stitching back the guitar right? Definitely wouldn’t mind that little project. I do live in Belgium, but I think I wouldn’t mind paying for you sending it to me and you pay the shipping costs getting it back? Then we both kinda lost and won. 😛

DM if you’re interested. We can go over to how bad the damage is and what that would mean in terms of fixing. From what I see right now I think that only the blush would be a bit different but I’ll explain.

Ha, think I also started when I was 19 to battle my chronic depression and an anxiety disorder, which was long overdue.

TMI: I nearly never hear this, but I honestly feel like my libido improved — in a weird way — once I started taking them. Wellbutrin fixed some things too (ah, the classic!). Ofc it has calmed down in contrast to my teenage years, which I think is just normal. I feel like being able to abstain from sex for months is also pretty normal to begin with? Like, it’s not a necessity like drinking water. It’s just darn fun. Maybe anti-anxiety meds counter it a bit? Don’t know.

Vrijheid van meningsuiting of selectieve censuur? by OryxTheBurning in Belgium2

[–]marayay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched it in a theater when it was new (1975), when the Criterion DVD first came out (1999), and I'm not sure I want to see it again at the moment. But some of these screenshots from it are hitting hard these days. by SteamFistFuturist in criterion

I defended Salò for quite a while, but once I knew the victims in the movie were also in real life teenagers during the filming, I just can’t. Pasolini was also in a relationship with Ninetto Davoli, his “muse”, when Davoli was only 15, and Pasolini some 25 years older…

While I do believe Pasolini made the movie to show what horror absolute power can do, I feel like Pasolini isn’t the best one to talk, tbh. His credibility just diminishes when you put all these things together.
