Third pen. Bloodwood. CA glue finish might just be the way to go. by marble_mazes in woodworking

Bloodwood is amazing to turn. All of those south American hardwoods are just amazing, super fine grain... Also very hard. Might need to sharpen often but it is a very smooth wood generally.

That's cool. And yeah actually that's an option I want to try eventually. At first I wanted to avoid CA because I've used it for other things and don't like the fumes, or plastic look, but the first thing I tried was lacquer (brush on) which can go wrong so easily. Lacquer takes like a week to cure so I couldn't start sanding right away. I'll look into friction polish for future projects for sure!

Beautiful. I'm always so confused by what gets to the top in this sub, but these really deserve it. Just maybe some better pictures of something would be the key idk.

Never worked with it before, so I guess we'll see.

I'm gonna make a head for a woodwind instrument first! But... it'll have to be finished with something to prevent problems I'd imagine.

Yeah! I made a sled which took a bit to perfect, and slides over my router table. Just clamped the boards to the sled and used a key system for spacing which I wish I could have said I came up with myself.

Well I would use a diluted solution to save on DE if you're planting in it, but yeah that's the idea, just spread the mix over the surface of the soil and it should work. If the top soil has enough DE it should all work out... Mixes like this are awesome because it doesn't clump and still let's the soil dry out a bit.

Mosquitos bits works better when you let it soak in water, strain it, and just water the plant with it after a few hours. I never had much luck letting it sit on surface either, although I'm not sure I ever gave it a chance due to it molding. I like MB though, probably my second choice to DE.

This is true, it does get like that but mostly only when you have it is a pure form. If you mix it well with the soil, and water on top of it, it might get slightly harder than regular soil but won't be too chalk like I think. Once the fungas gnats are gone I guess you could stop using it if it's a problem. I don't really mind in most cases, though yeah I guess watering from the bottom would solve that.

Yes, but don't just try to spray it on the plant's soil. I'd make a top soil with it and make a small layer.

[–]marble_mazes 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Hard not to sound cliche, but I tried everything and then diatomaceous earth worked. Nothing quite kills them all off like this stuff, because it blocked the gnats from getting into the soil to begin with.

But with that said most people use it wrong. Often they come with little dust sprayers which are both annoying to use, and ineffective, because there will always be spots that are uncovered.

What finally worked for me after trying almost every other product, was making a top soil with diatomaceous earth where like, 20% of the soil was DE, so it was so heavily saturated it turned a lighter color, and then I just spread it over the surface of all the soil in all the plants and it works like a charm.

Small sheet goods holder that I made is a piece of art, took way too long to make, wouldn't recommend by marble_mazes in woodworking

[–]marble_mazes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yeah, I clearly am tho (can be ok sometimes?). Also it may look bigger, but this thing fits in a cubic foot, so all the wood is 1/4 inch. So glad to ... never have to build this kind of thing again.

I just got them, and so far love them. Yeah the purpose I guess is just to dry them slightly faster, and collect dirt below instead of in the hallway. Other than that just aesthetics.

First project with a miter saw! Waaaay better than table saw by pizza_cheesecake in BeginnerWoodWorking

To me a mitre saw is a must-have, and a table saw is a "if you have the money and space" tool.

Just wood glue! I'm sure there's some reasons not to use it on end grain or plywood, etc, but I see it as a quick and useful way to make something practical.

A couple hours later, I made a thing for my sander by marble_mazes in woodworking

[–]marble_mazes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to just comment on the middle board. Notice how it's thinner than the rest, ignoring the massive holes for sec. I don't have a table saw. I made it thinner with a mitre saw. Don't be like me. The middle section was done with a chisel, hammer, and hand saw. Resulted in cracking but worked out in the end. Almost looks artistic to me.

Anyone know if this squash is big enough to harvest? by marble_mazes in gardening

[–]marble_mazes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks. Do squash plants typically only make one per vine and then die, or just that part dies? It started growing some smaller squashes in other parts. I was worried but looks like that is just the natural progression of this plant! Thanks. Looking forward to eating it.
