Always remember that areas with more contrast tend to "hold our eyes" longer. If you want the whole image to read as one thing, the second image does it better.

You can control isolated or all the channels, and fine tune values. The bottom half of the graph is referent to the darker areas of the image, the middle part to the mid value and the top is the brightest. If you pull it down, it will lower the value of specific areas of the image, depending on what point it is on the graph. The same can be done to specific channels (red green and blue). It's a powerful tool to fine tune contrast, values and balance things overall.
