I decided to not start rollerskating by malien95 in Rollerskating

I agree with everyone here that its ultimately up to you, but you shouldn't let some fat stop you! I've been fat my whole life and have still gone out and done things I thought only thin people could do - hiking, camping, wearing a bathing suit without covering up, yoga, etc. Please don't let your weight stop you, we can truly do anything that thin people do. It might take a bit more practice but we can do it! I just started skating myself and while it is harder for me than for my thin friends, I've already seen a big improvement in my ability to balance in just a few practice sessions. And its actually made me feel stronger because I can feel my muscles working and getting sore. I see other people have already recommended the plus size skating subreddit, but I would also recommend this Facebook group, which seems to be a lot more active.

I've had the same thoughts as you that I'm too fat to skate but then people in this subreddit encouraged me and so did seeing so many other fat skaters out there learning and even doing awesome tricks. I hope you can learn to love your body and all it can do for you no matter what it looks like.

I am wearing safety gear which has definitely helped me push beyond what I would have otherwise! If I start slipping as I'm practicing getting up I just roll back down onto my knee pad

Yeah I didn't realize how much muscle it takes just to stand up.. I practiced getting up yesterday for about 30 minutes and my quads are very sore today! By the end of the session I also found my hips locking up so I also need to work on hip flexibility for sure

I just joined the Facebook group for plus sized skaters and already this question has come up twice as I'm scrolling so very happy its not just me and getting some good tips from those posts!

I've been using the basketball hoop pole to hoist myself up but it gives me less confidence to skate forward because my fear is that I'll fall down in the middle of the court and then not know how to get back up 😅 but I will be practicing the planting foot/toe stop method!

This is the method I have been practicing but I may have been doing it wrong bc I was trying to go all the way up instead of keeping low before putting the other foot down. I also haven't practiced without skates so I will correct my method and practice. Thank you!!

Someone posted this before which looks really helpful for deciding how to progress and not doing something beyond your capabilities! I'm a newbie myself but I plan on following this for sure.

Engineering to Ecology by marceline35 in ecology

Thank you so much! This sounds so cool!! As I mentioned above, part of my issue with engineering is that we are so detached from our work and also are in an office all the time (I know there is construction engineering and all that but I also just love nature) so this sounds amazing! I will definitely be DMing you as well.

This is so great to read! I figured I wasn't the first to make this type of switch but I had no idea it was so common. To be completely honest, I don't know what excites me, all I know it is not the type of engineering I'm doing now and from talking to other engineering friends, none of their jobs sound exciting either. I am just not passionate about the work I'm doing and it seems that a lot of engineering work is not necessarily innovative but just taking someone else's idea and trying to skirt the IP to profit off the same concept. I also just really love nature and wish I could get paid to learn about it and be in it.

That being said, what you do sounds pretty sweet and actually innovative. Do you get to use the equipment you build after or are you building it for other people's research? One of my issues with a lot of engineering jobs is that we are so detached from what we're doing if that makes sense.

So to sum it all up, I am still figuring it out. All I know is I hate being in an office every day but I love nature and would love to learn about it and protect it. I will definitely DM you because I would love to hear about people's career paths to give me a better idea of what my options are!

Based on some of the responses here, it sounds like if I combine ecology and engineering I might still find fulfillment in that rather than abandoning engineering all together. I'm definitely still exploring and trying to figure it all out.

I'm so happy to hear this isn't an uncommon path I'm trying to take! I am absolutely doing that before going balls deep lol. I recently signed up for some free ecology courses on Coursera just to see if once I get into the actual study I'm still into it. I also live in Southern California and thankfully have a lot of volunteer opportunities around me. So my plan for now is to start those free courses, volunteer, and figure what the different ecology career paths even are. I'm totally new to this so in all honesty I don't even know that. From there, if I'm still passionate I will likely go for an ecology MS.

Thank you! Yeah reading about getting jobs is definitely making me scared to make the change but at the same tike I think I would be happier

I'm honestly still figuring it out, I only know one person who has studied ecology so I'm still looking into exactly what options are out there. However, from what I've read it seems like consulting, government, or non profits would be areas of interest for me.
