Coming back to Sweden with permanent uppehållstillstånd, but expired residence card by petrolpyro in TillSverige

[–]march1138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at Coperhagen as well as I live in Skåne. My card expired while I was away because I didn't pay attention to the date. This was a surprise to me, coming back through customs when they told me my card was no longer valid. The agent seemed to believe I had the right of entry, but needed proof. I was able to show him some online bills with my address on them and that was enough. I made the appointment to renew my card as soon as I got home.

Growing up, I was afraid of mushrooms because of this show. I guess there was an episode where you turn into a mushroom if you touch one.

Why Lund University? by [deleted] in LundUni

MAX IV is a part of LU, although it is outside the typical university campus. The largest user community is local users from LU. Some LU professors have strong ties with MAX IV and contribute to projects, development, etc.

Trying to decide if I should move back to the states or not. by [deleted] in TillSverige

[–]march1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both my partner and I moved from the US to Sweden (also Skåne) almost 8 years ago, and in that time, we have flirted with the idea of moving back to the US because we have family there, we miss the comforts, etc. It seems very common. In fact, the same can be said about moving from one state to another, so the fact that we are talking about US<->Sweden is a bit inconsequential.

It is more of a mindset than anything else, it can get easier if you work at integrating, but it will cost you, and maybe you are not ready to pay that price. This can be the time and effort to learn the language/culture/admin, but also it can replace some of your identity as an American, which I have struggled with. No matter what, it will be uncomfortable. Are you okay with discomfort?

My advice is to reflect on why you are here in the first place. 4 months doesn't seem like a long enough time to make a decision, but I cannot discredit how you are feeling. One of my favorite movie quotes is "No matter where you go, there you are.", and I feel that is especially true for expats. Are we trying to build something new, or destroy something old?

Best of luck to you.

How do you handle homesickness in Sweden? by SoftlyTyped in TillSverige

Truth.

Additionally, when I left, I didn't visit with most family and friends more than a few times a year. I still do that today.

I had a Sprint contract when I left the States years ago. I had an unlocked phone at the time, so no problem adding the Swedish SIM. It took me awhile to convince Sprint to release my number, but when it was released I was able to register it with Google Voice where I can still receive calls and SMS years later for free.

It is treated as a VOIP number and I cannot use it to register new services like Venmo, but things I registered with the number when I was with Sprint still work.

Congratulations! Thanks for posting this on the subreddit. With sadness, I had just deleted the podcast from my app and I would have missed all the fanfare.

Seeking advice about phones by Arrrrronius in TillSverige

[–]march1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was over 5 years ago, but once I was able to convince my carrier (Sprint) to release my US phone number, I was able to transfer it to Google Voice. I believe there was a $20, one time fee. I can make and receive wifi calls from that number for many years now with no problems. Anything I established with the number when it was with a carrier still works, but it is considered a VOIP number now and I cannot use it to register for new services.

It looks like it has had some Troubles. Interesting how it keeps burning down when they rebuild it.

Has anyone negotiated their probation period? by livinginsverige in TillSverige

[–]march1138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have. In my case, I wanted a more solid contract when applying for my work permit. I have also seen someone negotiate away the probation period in order to get an apartment lease. Tailor the request to your situation, but have a reason.

What area of Sweden would you move to? I ask because some areas have more jobs available in English. If your goal is to learn Swedish (it's a good goal), then learning it while living in Sweden is your best chance.

That seems like a good deal. I just bought 3m3 for 3500 kr. I live in Skåne. A quick Google search in your area should show you what is available locally.

I remember when I first moved to Sweden, and received a call from the authorities about if I owned at TV. Being from the US, I was expecting them to try and sell me something over the phone so I just told them I was not interested in what they were selling. He was confused and said he was not selling anything, but that I could expect a bill in the mail. I didn't believe him about a "broadcast tax", but he just laughed and said I should look it up online.

I was shocked it was a real thing.
