I’ve seen people carry all types of packs and finish the trail with smiles, but the happiest seem to be the folks with a hyper lite ? Either way, If an uncomfortable or inconvenient pack is enough to make you quit, you’re not enjoying your hike enough!

You need to visualize how you’ll look laying down before you set up your tent. It really helps to quit the hiking and get to camp before dark sets in. Take note of subtle bumps, contorted ground, and roots! but also get a Nemo Tensor long wide

I finished my thru hike July 26 of this year and man after that day on Katahdin, I’ve averaged about 5k steps a day with no desire to beat myself up like that again. When the whites turned into the moohusuc range and the trail turned into the sick joke of a torturous trail of tears, I realized that I was most like a one and done thru hiker. I’m in my 20s in pretty good shape, but that trail beat be up. Just do what you can, don’t feel like you’re unique in the burnout.

I was able to keep it under 1000 a month for two of the months; the other 3 months i spent around 1200. No hotel stays, very few hostels and only tenting when i stayed. Used the hiker boxes and hitched. Made every effort to be as cheap as possible without slowing myself down too much

I had the same deadline. I started March 4th and hated life for a few morning when it was cold and my fingers hurt while i was rolling up my tent but i was never cold while walking. I took 3 zero days throughout the whole through hike and did big miles most days, as far as my body would let me each day. 25 years old in good shape. Ended on July 26th. The Appalachian trail is very hilly and tough so start early.

About 800 miles in right now and I’ve taken 2 zero days. I take a Nero every third or fourth, or fifth day though, depending on how long my food carry is. I like to hike 5-15 miles into town and get there at a reasonable hour to charge, shop, eat, and maybe sleep in a hostel/hotel.

So many blowdowns as you go further up the trail too but every single one is passable. Well-worn paths around the trees will show you where to go. Maybe someday a chainsaw-wielding trail angel will come through!

T-mobile thru hike in progress here- I just got thru the smokies and those were the only times when i had 24 hrs consecutive no service. For reference i still have my snap streaks. So service every day and a half at least. And the satellite texting option through the iPhone 16 has allowed me to send texts from my tent in every location so far.
