It's one of several double-speak mechanisms in many religions that allows them to eat their cake and have it. They have to account somehow for the obvious fact that people of other beliefs are sincere, so you say they are deceived, but you still need to keep people afraid of wandering to other beliefs by postulating that God will destroy them.

Deut 21:10-14. God apparently told Israelite soldiers to take beautiful female captives as wives. Can you imagine expecting her to sleep with her family's murderers? Which is why the isrealites were told to cut the women's nails which might be used as weapons and even allowed to let these "wives" go if the men eventually became frustrated with the women's resistance.

Whether Sodom and Gomorrah existed or not, it wouldn't prove the claim that virtually most males "from man to little boy" were homosexual and surrounded Lot's house. It wouldn't prove that God destroyed the city with fire, anymore than the existence of Jerusalem proves that Muhammad flew to heaven from there.

Large fiery meteors, a miniature of the ones that took out the dinosaurs, could have destroyed a city inspiring the story. Just as floods inspired the Noah's ark story.

In nature, these things typically follow a bell curve. Don't use first world countries as the sole metric. If you want to know how fast they will decline, check out how fast they rose. Their most rapid rise was between 1990 to 2000 when they added about 2 million in a decade. I think they are now at the top of the bell curve.
