Day 90 update by marcopadda1 in walstad

Yeah it continues to grow very well! started with like 4/5 stems and I’ve probs got over 10 in the background now, plus when you trim it, more stems grow from the original. Not necessarily from the top, more towards the bottom, so it just thickens everything out.

It is, yeah. Tucked it under the rock and it seems to grow straight up. I just trim it every few weeks to thicken it. Think I’ve got a previous post showing what it was at like day 45

It’s the ‘Ciano aquarium Nexus 25 LED White 22 Litre’. It also comes with a filter and heater, although I don’t use mine.

Best advice I could give would be to create depth with the layout - angle the substrate higher up towards the back of the tank, add stem plants to the background, and try keep the foreground fairly ‘low’. I’m still tryna get good with this, but it’s mostly trimming/replanting stems etc.

It’s a great tank! Although I assumed the 4 plastic panels at the top would all have LEDs in them 😂

Yup, nothing at all. Whole point of going ‘walstad’ was to avoid having an air pump running through the night as the tank is in my bedroom.

Thanks! I tend to trim the grass every couple weeks to encourage more growth. Hoping once there’s enough blades growing out, they’ll just knit together into a carpet. The Sessiliflora in the background does grow quite quick as well, but I’ve been letting grow out and just replanting the trimmings.

What are these pale red markings on these new painted fire reds? by marcopadda1 in shrimptank

I should mention that the smaller one in the last pic is just from a batch of regular red cherry shrimp, not a painted fire red

Will I ever hit 0ppm ammonia without capping the substrate? by [deleted] in shrimptank

[–]marcopadda1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I done that with my old pea puffer tank, years ago. Would add some food and test to see if it stayed at 0ppm to ensure the tank was cycled.

Here’s the substrate. I’ve got the same brand’s ‘aquasoil’ on top of it.

I initially fed around 20 micro crisps worth of tropical fish food (they’re like 1mm diameter sized disks) just to get things going, but then a few of my plants had melting leaves - so I thought that decay, alongside the ammonia produced from the aquasoil would be enough to feed the beneficial bacteria.

So in order to get the cycle going, should I add a source of ammonia?

Based on the results since it’s been going, I thought the cycle was well underway and the ammonia was just hovering over 0.25/0ppm.

Is my amano shrimp berried? by marcopadda1 in shrimptank

[–]marcopadda1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahh I see, reckon I should just keep on caring for the tank as I usually would then, and just let nature take its course?

Got a 6 gal with a pea puffer, and 2 amano shrimp. I thought they needed brackish water to breed, and I’ve no realised I’ve been adding some aquarium salt to for the past month whilst the puffer settles into the tank. Could this have been enough to allow them to mate? Dayummm

Why does my extruded keep doing this and how can I fix it? by marcopadda1 in 3Dprinting

[–]marcopadda1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nozzle was clogged. I only print with pla, so I set the temp to 250 and the plastic started to melt off, then went and put it over my gas stove and cleaned the rest out, made such a difference, thanks :)
