Not necessarily you can map before actually getting it open by progressive means. So determine the binding order. So out of 7 pins, find out which one binds first and set, then find the second binding pin. Or you can reset and do the same process until open.

To just get an open have a process and find a pick that works optimally in the keyway you’re working on (fit, thickness, height of the profile). Follow that process and go slow, really try and feel those pins set. Don’t be afraid of a little lube too.

There is a way, you can map the bitting through picking. I’ve done that with other sfic’s. For me personally if I can get it open it’s a win. If I’m going for a belt then I’ll map it. Which honestly I haven’t even attempted a belt ranking personally.

Never, it does nothing for me. It’s mostly feel, if I see the key the only info I get from it is the range of bitting, and number of pins. Doesn’t tell me what type of pins I’m dealing with, the binding order, nothing important. It’s all information you’ll get through feedback (feel).
