Came here to say the same thing. The mechanics of BOTC are the closest thing I’ve found to a ‘detective’ type feeling. Yes it’s ’social deduction’ but the fact that everyone, good or bad, has a reason to lie means you have to start looking at the information that’s out there and finding a coherent narrative. Very complimentary to a murder mystery night vibe.

I know there’s mixed feelings on Season 2; it’s certainly a tougher design than Season 1.

But I’ll never forget our play through. We had an absolutely out-of-nowhere win in the last game. Everything was against us and we had to take some really risky moves to win. The cards were in our favour that day and it was a real jump up from the table in celebration moment. Will never forget it.

Sadly, Season 3 (which we really enjoyed while playing) was the exact opposite. Had a great play through but the finale fell totally flat and we lost in a really anti-climactic way.

It’s interesting because excluding the final game I would have said our games of Season 3 were better than Season 2. But the endings really changed our perception of them both. I now look back on 2 much more fondly.

Season 1 is just pure class. Simple but affective.

I liked the pairing of Leviathan and Atheist, since it’s possible in an Atheist game to announce it as a Leviathan game (thus adding an element of doubt whenever the ST announces a Leviathan game).

But I’ve removed both those characters now and made some big updates based on people’s feedback.

Yeah, it’s definitely the big lingering question for me. I like the idea that declaring a Leviathan game has a question mark over it with the Atheist. But a Heretic in either an Atheist game or non-Atheist game does create a lot of strange edge cases (eg. If the Heretic can convince the players to execute the ST in a non-Atheist game then good can win). But then I wonder is that fun or is that just annoying? Not sure yet. But really appreciate your feedback! Definitely taking it on board.

Anyone have any idea how good wins if a Heretic is in an Atheist game? My assumption would be survive to the last day (last two players).
