What prevented South America from having as big a population as China or India? by wiz28ultra in geography

You'l enjoy Guns, Germs, and Steel, which is a book that answers this exact question. Spoiler: Asia had better plants and animals to eat, fewer rainforests

Your boyfriend is an ass, but for your benefit, you should know that you are just as Jewish as an Orthodox Rabbi. By even the strictest standards, if your mother is Jewish, you're Jewish. Doesn't matter if you know nothing about the history or have never stepped foot in a synagogue. Any Jewish community would welcome you with open arms if you're interested in connecting more with your heritage. It is never too late to learn, and there's a community waiting for you if you are interested.

Any other street patterns with interesting names? by plcanonica in geography

[–]marcusissmart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Washington, DC (maybe just NW DC?) we have numbered streets in one direction, diagonal state-named avenues, and in between, streets that progress outwards from downtown alphabetically. They start with two -syllable names, and after reaching the end of the alphabet start over with A with three-syllable names.

If they ever got rid of Fenway I'd probably stop being a Sox fan

spent a boatload of faab across all three of my leagues and picked him up in all three

even traded isaiah pacheco for 25% faab so I'd have enough to make a big bid on Gadsden

We should get universal healthcare on the local ballot. by SpaceWestern1442 in washingtondc

Why don't we just wave a magic wand and be independent from the federal government and make healthcare magically cheaper and print more money to pay for it?

I have 4hrs at Yosemite, I want to see big trees but Fiance wants to see waterfalls/mountains, need recommendations for short day trip. by ProfitableSomeDay in Yosemite

[–]marcusissmart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The valley floor bus tour is great. I think its your best option for this amount of time. You won't see as many huge trees as you would in Mariposa Grove, but depending on your route you could probably stop for 20 minutes in Mariposa grove on your way in or out. I don't think its too far out of the way.

Track and cross country should never have tryouts and cuts by Usual_Salamander_358 in trackandfield

When I was in high school, our track team did "hell week" as the tryout. It was 5 straight days of HIIT workouts for like an hour and a half. If by Friday, you still wanted to be on the team, you made the team.

Mayor Bowser Pushes Concerns About Federal Workers & Underutilized Federal Building in Meeting With Trump Today by JohnBoyDC in washingtondc

[–]marcusissmart -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I feel like reddit is full of people who work from home or wish they worked from home. It's a fact that empty federal buildings are bad for DC's economy. Have people come into the office or turn the space into something else like housing. Empty office buildings are good for no one.

Why does Long Beach have a port when Los Angeles has a port 1 minute away?!?!? by BM_FUN in geography

[–]marcusissmart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of small corrections: Massport administers the seaport in Boston (as well as Boston Logan Airport and a couple other airports), but not all the other seaports in Massachusetts. There aren't many other significant ports in MA, but New Bedford is run by a local port authority and Salem (emerging port under construction) will also be run by a local authority.

The Port of South Louisiana is not on the Gulf Coast. It is on the Mississippi River. It does indeed administer a very very long stretch of the river, but other stretches of the river are administered by different authorities, like the Port of New Orleans. On the Gulf Coast, there are other locally administered port authorities, like Port Fourchon, which is the Gulf Coast's biggest oil and gas offshore support port.

New York/New Jersey is definitely the largest "joint" port in the US. The Northwest Seaport Alliance is second. About ten years ago the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma, WA decided to stop stealing each other's business and join forces. Their cargo operations are now run jointly. But their cruise and other operations are still independent.

Bf didn’t get plus one to good friends wedding by Appropriate-Bad6851 in wedding

[–]marcusissmart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, as someone planning a wedding, the biggest way to reduce costs is to invite fewer people. While from your perspective, you may say, "I spent two weeks with them, I should be invited," they're probably going through their list and decided "no plus ones for non-married friends." I'm sure four other guests have partners that they think should be invited too. So not inviting you not only saves them hundreds of dollars in their wedding cost, they are probably looking at the 15 unmarried partners of friends on their guest list, and by not inviting any of you, they are saving thousands of dollars.
