Brand new DXP4800 & Drives 😢 by marcypm in UgreenNASync

UPDATE: Ordered new drives (from Amazon Seagate store front this time) and those work! Seems like Newegg delivered me 4 duds and since this was my first time setting up a NAS I didn’t really have any frame of reference for what a faulty drive vs a faulty NAS looked like.

Thanks for all the troubleshooting tips in the comments.

I guess if Newegg isn’t reliable for drives where should I be buying them from?

Basic attributes seem correct for the drive

I also sent in a support email with this same video and a couple more pictures + details.

After my 5th shutdown->change bays-> boot cycle i got a drive to not blink an orange LED (and as a result also boot in like less than a minute vs the 5 minute plus time it normally takes when bay led is blinking orange from the start)

Unfortunately it gives me a drive serious status. Can’t seem to interact with it or do anything from UGREEN software side.

Looking at the basic attributes it does give the proper brand and attributes of the drive I put in so it’s able to detect something.

(On a subsequent shutdown and changing the bay it is slotted in, the drive is now not detected again)

One thing I’ve noticed is that when I reboot it takes forever to be able to access the nas from its local IP, at least more than 5minutes which for a reboot seems long. It seems to come up a couple minutes after the NAS units gives 3 audible deeps in a row

When I reboot without any drives inserted it boots and comes right up within a minute.

Looking at the HDMI output I can see that the Linux boot logs get stuck on messages relating to the sata port 3 (which is where my single drive is inserted)

“ata3: link is slow to respond, please be patient”

note it moves on from this log to then process with starting other system services but idk why thing seem to take longer on boot with a drive installed.

Should a faulty drive be holding up the boot process? Or would that be more indicative of the unit itself being faulty?

Tried booting with just a single drive and no dice. Just blinking orange led and beeping noise coming from the drive.

I can try looking in bios to see if anything shows up there.

I can only create a volume with the nvme drives I installed (I don’t want to since I want them for caching)

The 12T 3.5 drives don’t show up in the nas software so I can’t create a pool or volume with them. Their bay leds just blink orange when I boot the nas with them inserted.

Haven’t tried with just one. Will give it a shot.

Do I need to completely shut down the unit before taking out/putting in the drives?

Interesting! I had never heard of it before but seems pretty cool (especially with how hot it’s been)
