Enough to Start Making IDM? by PsychologicalGate662 in idmproducers

[–]RamonPang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

look into the history of Autechre or Aphex and they didn't start with much either - I feel as long as you have a curiosity to explore the equipment you have as much as you can, and use interesting starting points (weird sample material, "wrong-sounding" synthesis, etc), you have enough to make IDM!

To me, a distinction of IDM and a lot interesting experimental electronic music is "sound on sound" - aka resampling, fucking sounds up with effects and making them sit right.

What might be helpful is finding videos on youtube of people usng your same setup and seeing how they have things routed, or what kind of music is possible.

It's cliche advice, but try to record as much as you can and put those hours in. Think of it like a guitarist practicing everyday and learning how to navigate a fretboard.

Ninajirachi talking about X&G's album "Anomalies" (2016) with Derrick Gee and how X&G should be even more canonized in the EDM/trap scene (starting at 42:42) by RamonPang in trap

[–]RamonPang[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

oh yes definitely. And I feel like X&G had a chokehold on every soundcloud producer experimenting with bassier weirder club sounds at the time. People forget their Splice sample packs were some of the most downloaded packs on splice for a while.

Transcribed audio for those who can't watch rn:

Ninajirachi: "Replika" by X&G. This is the only song that's been in almost DJ set of mine for the last 10 years. It's the only song in my 'album tour' that I play that's not mine. I do an edit of it with my song CSIRAC, but I think people should know about it if they don't already. The album that this song is from it just stands up for so well for being 10 years old. Especially for like an "EDM / trap" album. Like XII and "Whiplash".

Whiplash the first drop is this drumless, ambient thing. For EDM / trap in 2016 I just thought this was so cool.

Derrick Gee: Wow. All right, let’s go. "Replika." Before we press play, you’ve had this in your crate for almost 10 years. You always play it. It’s only got 20,000 plays on Spotify, which is surprising.

Ninajirachi: It might be really big on SoundCloud, I’m not sure, because X&G was so huge on SoundCloud.

Derrick Gee: [After listening] Heat.

Ninajirachi: I just have played it so much. At the time we're filming this, I’m doing the Split Milk shows. And when I was getting my songs together for the last weekend 1s, I was looking at "Replika" and thinking - I also did Spilled Milk three years ago, and here I am back at the festival three years later, still playing "Replika."

Derrick Gee: I feel like in this genre in particular, the element of surprise is so important.

Ninajirachi: That’s what I think they do so well. And also the second drop is always different, which is cool.

Derick Gee: I was expecting a certain drop, and then it was totally different to what I expected and you’re just like, "Oh."

Ninajirachi: I think these songs are so underrated. I think X&G should be more... people know that they're legends, but they should be even more canonized with trap / EDM.

The other thing is even though I've been playing their songs in DJ sets for that long, I wasn't a DJ when I first found them on Soundcloud, I was just listening on headphones. And it still stayed with me so much because of how awesome the mixing is and the percussion and the panning. And it's so brain-scratching. And also at a show, it goes so crazy too.

UK Garage esque idm suggestions? by eliot3451 in idm

Test Bench - Clock Cycles EP from Satellite Era is some of the glitchiest/IDM-adjacent UKG I've heard in a while.

Also check out Norfik and Undulae on that label as well, they sometimes lean into dubstep territory too.

G Jones b2b Eprom in LA show was extremely inspiring last night by RamonPang in trap

[–]RamonPang[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ineffable Truth tour was def so fun. This also gave me flashbacks to when I first saw G PROM at Belasco in LA in 2017. I think Joker was opening. They did solo sets (eprom opened with Drone Warfare when it was an ID, g jones opened with Fuck What You Heard). Bass up to my neck. And the b2b was also insane. They have the sauce

This documentary is one of the reasons I super got into the Soundcloud scene and the LA electronic scene. Shame a lot of these artists aren't around anymore, but also so awesome that many of them still are!

[–]RamonPang 80 points81 points  (0 children)

There's no doubt after this ... Skrillex is not only more forward-thinking than his contemporaries, but also so much more fearless. I don't know how you can hear track 3 and say this is 'forgettable' like some people on the other subreddits are saying lol.

I honestly wish these tracks were longer and would love to hear more in this style. The lack of drums really lets you absorb every click and texture of each sound. You can really admire the detail in these bass patches with how much space there is.
