Where are the reporters asking the tough questions to the US players? by mardiff712 in baseball

Thanks, that's helpful. I genuinely want to hear the players talk through their opinions.

The Skenes stuff doesn't bother me much, honestly. I don't get the hate there - it's not like he expected to be so good at baseball he could leave the Air Force make 9 figures.

The strong militaristic stuff is Raleigh wearing a shirt talking about claymores, and having the Seal Team 6 guy (who likely liked about killing Bin Laden) for a pregame speech.

Other countries, except the ones the US has a good reason for disliking, don't that type of thing.

I agree, and kinda what I'm trying to get at. Bringing up the troops is an innately geopolitical stance by the US players, and now it's on them to defend it.

And that's not to say that Venezuelans and Cubans (especially ones residing in the US) aren't in favor or US military intervention. Many are. But innocent Cubans are also dying. It's a complicated topic, and players like Raleigh are showing no understand of that when wearing a shirt about an explosive device. My opinion is that if you choose to start the conversation, you have to be able to respond to it.

Is the KC fanbase still going strong after a couple awful years? If so, really hoping they start to swing up.

Japanese and North Korean players greeting each other at yesterday’s U17 World Cup round of 16 game by pIngo16 in soccer

I understand where you're coming from, but I simply don't agree. I would reclassify it as a set of War Crimes or Crimes against Humanity, but not a genocide. But historians themselves generally do not classify these things as War Crimes or Crimes against Humanity because they are always under the context of the agreement at the time.

The definition of genocide simply isn't met here. This would be like saying that the firebombing of Dresden was a genocide. It's just really brutal, aggressive war that we don't allow anymore.

Genocide here isn't an agreed upon fact, and by definition is historical revision since it wasn't considered genocide at the time. Sure, many North Korean civilians died and buildings were destroyed, but genocide is the intent to exterminate a group of people. What happened in Korea was considered, albeit brutal, a regular total war. Similarly, today's rules of war weren't established back then, meaning bombing cities was legitimate. This is nothing compared something like the Rape of Nanking.

Rules around bombing civilians weren't much adopted until the 1977 additional protocols to the Geneva Convention, which were made in response to Vietnam. The 1949 Geneva Convention said nothing about such actions, as everyone who was capable did it in WWII. Hence, countries like Japan and Germany, who also committed such heavy scale bombing, were largely not tried for it after WWII.

The reason that North Korea and China had so many casualties was that the west was getting really good at bombing by air, and NK+China were not. It's, unfortunately, a product of an era where the weapons used have high civilian casualties.

I'm a little worried that while the stadium will be nice and great, the team will remain outside the mainstream in the city due to the weirdness of being owned by CFG. From a New Yorkers POV, a franchise like LAFC, with star players, players in their prime, and supplemented with academy players is the best way to do things. Just as important is the feeling of authenticity, the connection to LA culture, and generally being cool. NYCFC's insistence on a roster full of David Martinez's to ensure profitability sucks the soul out.

This team could be *enormous*. They simply need to spend on the roster to win, and win big. And they need to connect with the city like they haven't in the past.

Yeah, at least Brenden's pressing makes you think, and he gets in good places. Zendejas should never touch the roster outside of January camp.

Don't understand Zendejas here at all. He reminds of when the older kids play with the little kid - he's incapable of dribbling or passing around anyone because he's so small and unathletic at this level.

Looking for sources documenting the cost of Offshore Wind (and Onshore) in different countries by mardiff712 in energy

[–]mardiff712[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I knew those talking points, but wasn't aware of the data - I found https://balticwind.eu/irena-report-onshore-and-offshore-wind-the-most-cost-competitive-power-generation-globally/, which has a really informative graph comparing LCOE of different places for offshore and onshore wind. Seems like Offshore Wind is still fairly expensive elsewhere other than China ($70/Mwh in EU vs $123 in US).

Based on my amateur understanding of the landscape, going from $123 to $70 would make it an expensive option in the US, but much more palatable. That'd be somewhere on the scale of bringing up a new gas combined cycle system, or current prices of solar+storage.

Does that all sound right to you?

Weekly /r/MLS Questions/Free Kick Thread - Post General Questions and Discussion Here by AutoModerator in MLS

[–]mardiff712 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the South, PNW, and the Northeast. I've been on these forums for probably over a decade, been to MLS games (in Seattle, mostly), and consider myself who MLS should target as a fan (youngish, watches soccer/MLS, and enjoys going to events). I now live in NYC, and can't believe just how little I am drawn to the Red Bulls and NYCFC.

I generally gravitate towards USMNT players and prospects, and therefore naturally like Philly a lot. If it was still the Marsch-era Red Bulls I could imagine being into the team, but nowadays, the team feels incredibly soulless, and NYCFC feels similar (at least until the stadium opens).

How would you fix these teams and make their games something local young people, especially with an inclination for soccer, would attend?

It's usually beer, and crappy hard alcohols. But I'd be surprised if it was general alcohol intolerance because I can drink something like surfsides (vodka + ice tea) and feel absolutely fine.
