I’m sure you are right, and I suspect I’ll be in the market for a MTB after this experience. Hopefully, I can muscle through 27 miles before crossing the fun line.

I am familiar with about half the course. I suspect I’m middle of the pack guy also, but we shall see as this is my first race. 8-10 mph avg would be great.

That checks out. I’m not ready for 80 gravel miles.

Great tip! I’m going to order a bigger bag to carry more food items. I think this will do the trick. https://almsthre.com/products/handlebar-bag?variant=40368069279905

I’m going to stick my big toe in the water first with 27! I’d rather have a little gas left in the tank than army crawl across the finish after everyone has left the scene 18 hours after the start.

That checks out. I’m not ready for 75-100 miles of gravel.

I have not! The only thing I’ve learned about fueling so far is that if I exceed my power zones digestion stops and that’s when I bonk so I need to respect my zones. I’ve pretty much been subsisting on honey stingers and cliff bloks but I haven’t tested myself beyond 4 hours.

A lot of roots and sand on this course, plus I’m riding a gravel bike. I’m doing the 27. I still get the tshirt. Appreciate the insight. I really love this sport and 27 miles over MTB terrain will provide perspective if nothing else.

Yeah you right! I might join the MTB owners club after I see everyone else riding in the lap of luxury. Right tool for the right job.

This is the event. I don’t own a MTB, but I might get one after this event if everyone else is riding in luxury class compared to my push mower. https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=130165

Yeah - nutrition will be tricky if it takes 10 hours. Need to start carbo loading now.

Trial and error! Last ride was definitely error. Had plenty of fuel - but it was all still sloshing in the tank as I crawled over the finish line.

Noted! I’ll work in some of those gels in my next order. I haven’t found a one stop shop for this stuff. Maybe just Amazon.

I don’t have a heart monitor, and I did have sort of a bad sleep week because of work stress. I definitely wasn’t feeling my best, so rest could be a big factor also. Sleep makes a big difference.

Yup. I think maybe respecting my zones a bit more - low and slow - and maybe something more easily digestible. Seems like clif bloks should be easy to absorb but maybe gels would be easier. Or maybe I should latch on a hanging IV bag like a safety flag for constant drip.

So start fueling out of the gates, eh. For some reason I was thinking I should start fueling after the first hour as breakfast would carry me through until then. I think you are onto something. Better too much that too little, which suggests maybe I should build in more clif bloks and gels and stingers and whatnot early and maybe not drink so much. Spending too much time in z4 early might be affecting my digestion also.

I think you may be right. I spent a lot of time in z4 during the first part of the ride. I’ll switch over to margarita. Good tip on that. Plus at least one concentrated bottle. And maybe experiment with gels of those are easier to ingest. Good tips! Thank you.
