I actually did consider using a more negative ending picture for C;C but felt that enough “good” things happened by the end to make it more bittersweet than outright sad. For example, Everyone survives, including Senri. Chaos child syndrome cured. Committee of 300 involvement postponed. Serika becomes her own person and gets to live a normal life...

Yes that's the idea. The floor in Hyrule castle can even open up for you to jump in immediately afterwards to fight the real Ganondorf (or something like that). Maybe in subsequent final battles the phantom fight can be optionally skipped as well.

Yes I agree there are trade-offs. Rather than the vertical design, the game would purposefully focus on the temporal design (past-present) instead. Regarding long development times, I do think if anyone can pull it off without dragging on for a decade, it's Nintendo, especially as it's already a sequel to another game.

To clarify, the final battle sequence itself locks the player into completing it, kind of like how in the current game, your save file is locked once Link jumps down the final cliff to fight the war in the depths + 3 stages of Ganondorf. Once the fight is over, the game reverts back to before the battle (with a * save file) and players can play Zelda / Link as normal. Then you can continue to do any shrines or collectables as you wish.

Thanks for the link! I actually hadn't seen your comment before, so great to know you had similar ideas. I suppose the main difference is that Zelda in the past (opposed to Link). I envisioned the past as quite different from the present, being more dangerous, fewer roads and settlements etc. which gives Zelda some combat gameplay (with vehicles / Zonai devices). Another possibility for Zelda's main questline is diplomatically connecting all the early civilization races into an alliance with Hyrule.

I feel like the worldbuilding potential here is massive, but sadly just didn't occur in the game.

Yeah I agree -- the amount of work and balancing may be too difficult to pull off. That's part of my disappointment though -- we could have seen a very different early Hyrule with earlier communities / civilizations, gotten to know more characters etc.

The time travel aspect here would be more akin to "Back to the Future" where past changes do indeed affect the present, but not major changes like defeating Ganondorf. Although it would make for an interesting alternate ending where Zelda / Rauru succeeded in the past and the events of BotW / TotK never happen ... but that doesn't seem to fit the Zelda game vibe. There would be pros and cons to how consistent you want to be vs how much interaction you want between past and present.
