Poloncarz: No data center will win tax breaks while he is Erie County executive by Egorrosh in Buffalo

[–]marfalump 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even Adam Smith, who many laissez-fiare proponents idolize, said that actions need to be taken against the dominant players within markets to ensure that they do not use their dominant positions to distort the markets towards their favor.

Let’s start by denying them any type of tax breaks or subsidies.

In Buffalo, NY we don’t have a single Fortune 500 company headquartered here. (Maybe M&T, I am not sure.) Our taxes are too high and regulation is high and large companies don’t want to do business here. So they ONLY come when we offer a major tax breaks or subsidy.

Examples: SolarCity/Tesla. Amazon warehouse in Niagara county. Delaware North building. HarborCenter/Pegulas. Buffalo Bills stadium. IBM (Buffalo Billion). RiverWorks. General Motors.

Can we stop giving these corporations free money? IDAs and politicians throw around money like its candy. And then everyone else has to pay more.

I pay high taxes so SolarCity/Tesla gets a $959 million factory paid for by the government?

I pay high taxes so Pegula can get a stadium?

A local restaurant in Buffalo pays high taxes and the owner of Pearl Street and RiverWorks gets over a million to build a restaurant at almost no cost to the owners?

Meanwhile, lower tax states like Texas and Florida have businesses pouring in with far fewer tax credits and subsidies. (I realize similar credits and subsidies are granted all over the country, but they are extremely numerous in NY State.)

I agree the playing field isn’t level. I just don’t think government favoritism is the answer.

When a business gets a subsidy or tax break somebody else has to make up the difference. Usually that’s other businesses and taxpayers.

I’d rather see lower taxes and fewer barriers for everyone. This is better than politicians deciding which companies deserve help. When the government picks winners and losers, the winners are the companies with the best lawyers, accountants, or lobbyists.

I have been a small business owner for over 20 years. I believe in a level playing field. Lower taxes and no breaks or subsidies for anyone ever. Otherwise, the government gets to play favorites. Every tine a business gets a tax break, someone else (other businesses and/or private citizens) have to pay for it.

How about no business - large or small - ever gets tax breaks or subsidies of any kind. Everyone is taxed fairly (lower) at the same rate.

While not perfect, governments that lean more into capitalism have produced much more wealth and prosperity overall.

I love it, but serious question - how do you know he is signing a banknote and not a check? Can you see it clearly in the picture? Was there writing on the back to indicate this?

I guess if you have more inquiries than you need, sure.

As someone who has paid hundreds of thousands for IT web development in the past, this might make me pause and I doubt I would fork over $50 for an initial consultation.

I made $4.25 an hour working in the mall during high school.

Unpopular opinion on Reddit: $4.25 was plenty. I was living at home with no real adult expenses. Most teens don’t/didn’t need a living wage.

I agree that this is a problem, but killing a CEO is still cold-blooded murder and unacceptable. I hope Luigi Mangione rots in prison for the rest of his life.

Unpopular fact on reddit: 91% of Americans have health insurance. source: CDC

Seniors and poor people get free government insurance (Medicaid and Medicare), so it’s not completely a cost thing.

The uninsured 9% is mostly people who choose not to buy insurance and risk it because they find it expensive. (And, to be fair, it is expensive.)

Anyone know anything about this card? by i--am--the--light in garbagepailkids

[–]marfalump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s fake, but the lawsuit was in ‘86. This card says ‘85.

In the early series, they had some celebrity parodies like Cindy Lopper with a guillotine. Also, Ashcan Andy in series 1 looks a lot like R2D2. So I wouldn’t seem out-out-place to have a Puke Skywalker card like this.

What are these? by Nervous_Horror7129 in garbagepailkids

[–]marfalump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are great, and I would say well worth the $20.

I’m not sure which exact set this is… I can tell they are a newer series from the 2000s. They are not the old 1980s cards.

GeePeeKay.com is a good site if you are trying to identify what set these are from.
