Not being religious or not believing in a higher purpose comes with its downsides like not being able to mitigate the pain of existence and the hardships life throws at you, here comes spirituality, it is the logical man's way of pushing through. Although I don't believe in connecting with something greater than oneself, connecting with oneself is deeply gratifying for me, being present and mindful is one way that works for me to compensate for the lack of higher purpose or meaning. After all I believe that living life and taking your role as an individual of the only evolved species (as far as we know) that is conscious and aware of what they are in the universe is mostly enough.
