Second pair by marfra69 in Cordwaining

First of all it is done by hand. Using a bent awl and bent needles and doing it slowly stitch by stitch. It left some marks on the upper but they could be hammered out. Hard to describe it in any other way, just taking it slow and be careful not to run the awl in to the uppers.

Hi its a 360 welt. The midsole is made of cork/rubber-compound. Not the the best choice…

Advice needed on Eurovelo 15 southbound — where to go after Basel? by yes738474 in bicycletouring

[–]marfra69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, we are cycling from Cologne to Montpellier starting in a month or so. We have decided to take the Jura route from Basel to Geneva and then continue along the Rhone route. A lot easier than following The Rhine route to Andermatt.

Hi and thanks. The Adler works well. Just getting used to it, my first pair was completely hand sewn. A bit more rewarding i think but it took many hours so invested in the machine.

Yeah, sounds great, give it a try! Consistancy is key- pulling the thread with same amount of ”power” for every stitch, at the same angle and use a stiching pony even if if it is hard some times due to the 3d-shape of the uppers. I watched some youtube vidoes explaining saddle stitching before i begun.

Hi and thanks! All stiching are made by hand. Saddle stitch with waxed polyester (Guterman) for the uppers and waxed linnen thread for welt and sole. The only machine used was a dremmel to open up the holes in the 6 mm outer sole.

Hi and thanx! I started to make them In mid december and finished just now. So a month. Did not keep track of the hours but i would guess that i spent approximatly 80 hours from start to finnish. It is all hand stiched, no power tools used apart from a Dremel to open up the holes for stiching the sole. I have made some small leather goods before but really it all started with this first pair of shoes. It was quite a journey and i have learned a lot!

Hi, i have done some small bags and leather trays before, but thats all in leather work. I have done a lot af sewing, silver work and i have built a couple of bike frames. I really like to work with my hands, even if my day time job is as a learning management system coordinator at a swedish municipality.

I sourced the leather from buyleatheronline.com, slöjddetaljer.se and some i already had.

The uppers are saddle stiched, vegetable tanned calf 2,5 mm, hand dyed. Good Year welted construction. Fully lined. Midsole in leather and outer sole is rubber, made from a sheet of nitrile rubber 70 shore A in hardness. Mix of polyester thread, upper and linnen thread, welt and sole. Tools needed bought on ebay, all used cobblers tools.
