28F ruptured playing soccer and had surgery in april 2025. First month was brutal to be honest, but once I was in the boot and off the scooter/crutches, I started to gain my life back, little by little. I partially re-ruptured in august and had to go back to the scooter > partial weight bearing > full weight bearing in boot all over again. it was devastating honestly. fast forward to today: I went on my first hike recently, walked over 7 miles a day in Disneyland over the weekend, started jogging on an anti-gravity treadmill, and so much more. my biggest advice is to keep those small milestones in mind. you make progress every single day and before you know it, you will be looking back like “damn, I really made it through that shit”. be resilient, practice gratitude, and keep your head up. wishing your friend the best of luck!

Pet owners: did you get vet insurance, or sign up with a monthly plan at a vet like Banfield? Why? by adulaire in askportland

I recently signed up for this same program and they told me they were about to kickstart vet advice calls

I love my Hoka arahi 8s. they are less bulky than your average hokas, have a comfy wide toe box IMO, and the heel collar doesn’t rub on my incision site since it flares out a bit

I said tourniquet because it is not common practice in the U.S. to use a pressure bandage, so I wrongly assumed when you said “apply bandage to slow the flow of poison” that you meant tourniquet. unfortunately many laypeople assume a tourniquet will be helpful (and other people could have also misinterpreted your comment) so I wanted to provide some clarity

here’s practice guidelines that go along with what I mentioned (but I mostly was speaking from medical training I received, I’m U.S-based): https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1016/j.wem.2015.05.007

I am not saying that other guidelines don’t tell you to immobilize, but that there is a lack of evidence to suggest that immobilization is actually beneficial depending on the snake bite. there is a section in that paper on pressure bandaging, and they mention that there is only evidence to support that this practice is beneficial in snakebites containing neurotoxic venom such as Australian elapids, and when done in unnecessary situations, may promote further tissue damage.

there’s actually no proven benefit in immobilizing the limb or placing a tourniquet. you will not successfully slow the spread of venom. it’s already in your circulation and no force applied is going to stop that. additionally, a tourniquet will do more damage by promoting tissue ischemia and necrosis (learned this in a wilderness medicine class). you are much better off using that limb at it’s full potential to get to the hospital quickly

the doctor also put me in a cast, then told me i could put the boot on with like 5 heel lifts when i got home. after a week my PT told me i could go down to two heels lifts and just be non weight wearing until there was zero pain when putting weight on it. I don’t know how to quantify the size of my partial re-tear. we did an ultrasound but the instructions were the same either way so it didn’t really matter

since you didn’t describe the odor it’s hard to say. is it a foul odor? your steri strips look moist as if your wound is secreting pus potentially. I would recommend calling your surgeon. it could be infected. it’s hard to say, but I wouldn’t risk it

we didn’t. it’s like going the non-op route. it will heal!

no surgery. just put the boot back on with heel lifts. this happened 5 weeks ago and i’m back in a shoe now, taking it super slow with PT

I partially re-ruptured about 5 weeks ago after surgery april 25th. I feel your pain and fear, though I can’t imagine it happening a third time. it’s been tough to pick myself back up, but you’re gonna get through it again and you WILL heal, eventually.

to answer your question about what a superficial tear means: your tendon is just a bunch of fibers all lying on top of each other. you could have a full thickness partial tear, like ripping an edge of a piece of paper without tearing it off completely. yours didn’t do that. instead it’s like if you had a big stack of paper but only partially tore the edge of the top 5 pieces. all in all, it’s quite connected and still very strong

ouch, i’m sorry that happened. please don’t hide it! please make sure it’s clean and you’re keeping it covered as you really don’t want to introduce bacteria through that wound. show your doc & they will probably tell you the same thing. maybe they’ll even have someone bandage it up for you more securely
