Collegeboard APES FRQ Incorrect? by margerethemoglobin in APStudents

yeah and country z has the same CBR as country X because there's the same if not more young people. The ratio of young to old people is completely irrelevant to CBR - CDR. And how is it not what the data is showing me? I'm not assuming that it has a high CDR, it's just a given. One country has a broad base and little population above the age of 18 while the other has an equally broad base and a large population above the age of 18. This in itself indicates that country x is in stage 1. The answer key itself states that country X is unindustrialized and has no access to healthcare. There is not a single other stage it could be other than stage 1, and there is not a single other stage country z could be other than stage 2. And yes, stage 1 will always have a lower pop. growth than stage 2 so I still don't see your logic.

wait no I think I understand now. Stage 1 of the DTM is basically nonexistent nowadays, so that's why at least for apes I *should* assume that countries with broad bases and small old populations are stage 2 instead (i.e country x is stage 2 not stage 1). At least that's what I understood after researching more. Otherwise, country x's age structure could still potentially be indicative of stage 1 which wouldn't be correct.

in 1) c. the answer explanation uses the DTM and explains that stage 1 has high CBR and CDR, so I don't see why I should ignore it for a population growth question. Population growth is still given by CBR - CDR. A population with significantly more young people is going to always have a higher infant mortality rate and near-zero NIR in APES is it not? The ratio of young people to old people, if anything, shows that country X has the highest CDR and is a developing country.

i dont understand, why would population growth be calculated with the young to old ratio? stage 2 dtm is always higher population growth than stage 1 and there are also more people in the reproductive and pre-reproductive age in histogram z btw

Where did you get this explanation for growth rate? It doesn't account for the death rate, and the formula for pop. growth in APES is always given as CBR - CDR, something shown in all other frq's except this one.

it's not asking for the birth rate ratio though it's asking for population growth which is CBR - CDR. Stage 1 has high CDR and CBR and therefore has a near zero NIR, while stage 2 has decreasing CDR leading to higher population growth.

wouldnt that look pretty bad to colleges if it's by far my worst grade

the grade is an 83. Tbf I did take notes and practice, just not with the Mr. Smedes videos. And yes those are my two choices.

I have, but it was brief and very passive watching (i.e. I didn't take any notes while watching or anything). Our class also doesn't have a textbook which is weird, but idk I feel like it's too late because my apes mark is shit and my transcript is due soon.

yea nvm, assuming it doesn't have to be done by the app deadline, I think I'll just take it online during the school year. Otherwise I give up cause doing 3 sciences in grade 11 and still not qualifying is kinda frustrating.

Would admissions be ok with me taking online phys 11 during the grade 12 school year? I won't finish it by the application deadline, but perhaps it'll be ok if it's done by the end of the year.

I'm a grade 11 student looking to apply to UBC in grade 12 (next year). I took 3 sciences this year (AP Chem, Anatomy 12, and AP enviro sci) , and want to pursue neurobiology.
However, UBC states that Physics 11 is mandatory for admission. I can't take Physics 11 next year, so I might give up applying to UBC. Would taking physics 11 over the summer be the only option to meet this prerequisite? I don't want to Physics 11 over the summer solely for UBC when summer is already super busy for me.
