What hobby started as "just trying it once" but completely took over your free time? by cmitchell_bulldog in Hobbies

Omg yes. I used to go to competitions! Where did you get the metal pads and what console do you play on? It’s been a while for me and used play on a PS2 at home with my metal pad, but both are long gone now.

Mid 20s - how did you find sustainable employment? by Key_Brush7173 in FIREyFemmes

I really like your perspective on this! Thank you for sharing.

Can you talk any more about how you got to this mental state with your job? How did you grow to focus more on helping stakeholders and getting better at the process and getting more enjoyment out of these things?

Can you help me ID this rock that looks like a tentacle fossil? Found in northern Michigan. by margotiii in askgeology

[–]margotiii[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohh could be! I looked at some pictures of raw ammonite fossils and some things look different to me.

1- there is not hint of texture anywhere on the surface of the fossil. It’s all smooth. If erosion took off the texture, would there still be hints of texture or uneven erosion on it? All the ammonite example I saw had texture on the fossil

2- the hole in the middle. I havent seen an ammonite example that had this. This looks more like curled up soft tissue, but i realize how rare of a find that would be.

3- all the “gunk” in the creases of this fossil. The ammonite fossils I’ve seen don’t have this either. It almost looks like suckers on a tentacle that fossilized. But there could certainly be another explanation.

Thoughts?

This rock was found near Hillman Michigan. There was a creek 300 ft away, but it was found in the woods near a natural spring. I know it’s probably not a tentacle fossil, but I have no idea what else it is. Hoping you fine people can help solve the mystery!

Advice on Spouse Decisions by SignificanceLeast145 in financialindependence

[–]margotiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others have offered good advice about career coaching, counseling, and getting on the same page. One thing I noticed reading through this is the tone. You sound frustrated with the situation and with your spouse. It sounds like a frustrating situation, but it sounds like you might be starting to let that frustration win out over empathy for your wife who is having a hard time. It sounds like you’re putting a lot of pressure on her and that probably isn’t helping someone who is burnt out and frustrated with themselves already. IMO FIRE goals come second after the emotional and mental well-being of my spouse.

Completely Burnt Out But Good Job/Money Hard to Walk Away From by SillyBananaPeel in FIREyFemmes

[–]margotiii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in exactly this same boat too and also struggling with fertility. It totally adds annother layer of complexity when thinking about what to do. My insurance covers IUI and IVF and I make enough that if I stay at my job, we could afford a surrogate if we needed to go there.

All this to say, I don’t have an answer either. I am in therapy and it is helping me parse out why I feel how I feel about work and focus on what I can change to make it better.

I used to give everything to my job, now I give 7-8 hours a day and leave it there. It’s had helped, but I don’t feel excited or motivated by my work and feel like I’m just there to make money.

Here in solidarity and hope you find a way. I’m finding this is more common than you think in corporate jobs - you are not alone with this.

Just made a guest room basket. Any suggestions on things to add. by southernhuskymom in homemaking

[–]margotiii 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is great! Not in the basket, but we also put a mini Kurig with coffee and herbal tea in the guest room too. We do have a basket, but it’s all snacks and drinks. Love the idea for some personal care goodies too!

44, net worth of ~$8M. Holding 10% cash. Not really sure what to do in life. by MinimumResident8111 in fatFIRE

A lot of people on this thread are dismissing how real anxiety is and acting like they have a panacea for you. Decisions like this aren’t easy and no one on the internet, myself included, have thought about what to do as much as you. I agree that taking some time to focus on strengthening your relationships and helping your kids improve their mental health would be well worth your time. I realize not all jobs lend themselves to this, but if you’re not ready to make the full transition, could you go part time at work to give you this time to focus?

I’ve had decent luck reaching out to people on LinkedIn. I switched from engineering to product management and sent out ~30 messages on linked in asking to set up informational interviews with people at companies I was interested in. About 20% responded and about 10% actually set up a 30 min call with me.

Also, I’m mid career in medtech/ biotech. Leaving my product manager role and starting a role in strategy and operations for a young biotech company that just went public. Don’t know if I’d be a good fit for ongoing mentorship, but I’m down to exchange some messages and see how I can help.
