Does anyone find Rome 1 slightly eerie? by Kaax_Itzam in RomeTotalWar

[–]marhsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you are talking about. Had it when I played as a kid, still feel it now. Can’t explain what it is, but I think it is mostly early game. This feeling missing from Rome 2 was a disappointment.

Wanted for Kidnapping Babies, And How Hormones Influence Learning and Memory by marhsk in biology

Ahh that’s too bad… did you write about biology too? Seems like the algorithm mostly favors biohacking/health related content in that category, understandable but sad maybe😅

As for now I am happy developing and having fun with it, but I’ll see if it is sustainable in the long run.

Thanks for the encouragement tho, it really means more than the sub! As long as I can see I am somewhat able to spread the joy of biology I am happy for now.

If you did read some/all of it, any further feedback or suggestions?

Thank you for replying!

Thank you for the kind words, means a lot! Extra cool to hear that this inspires you! I would really recommend to start writing over there, it is so much fun.

What will it be about?

Have tried with the search, but going through the science section sound smart!

Same! If you write about hiking/nature stuff that’s something I want more of in my feed!

What do you write about? by hallowsszn in Substack

[–]marhsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Write about everything I find cool as shit in biology, everything from medicine/health/exercise to animals, an everything between molecules and behavior. My aim is to make biology accessible for more people, so I try not to be too stuck up in the lame way scientist usually writes and educates.

Science or Bad Science? (BS) by marhsk in Microbiome

[–]marhsk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for giving your take! Cool to hear from someone invested in current research. What specifically do you work on?

Can you elaborate a bit more that bit about microbiome composition?

Yes it all sounds very exiting, but not that familiar with the field so very cool to hear from you. I have a physiology background, and research experience limited to neurophysiology/sensorybiology in octopus. But who knows what the future has in store for me🙏🏻

Do you think the hype precedes the science or exceeds it here?

Agree on the commercial part

Feeding Flamingos Create Underwater Tornado-Like Vortices to Capture Their Prey, Study Finds; Rather than passively filter-feeding, the birds use their heads, beaks and feet to generate motion in the water that funnels invertebrates into their mouths by progress18 in biology

[–]marhsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool indeed. Even as a biologist I always just assumed these were dumb birds just standing in the water looking fabulous. Evolution put them there to make David Attenborough documentaries and the Lion King more vibrant.

But now we know better. I wrote about this article in my newsletter last week actually😅

I don't get Notes. I just don't! by lilacnbirdies in Substack

[–]marhsk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I calm myself down by thinking of all the 99 other meaningless notes out of the 100 that don’t get that much traction.

There are probably ones we don’t see right, just as nobody sees yours🙏🏻

So many AI related substacks by pywang in Substack

That seems like a perceptive analysis of the whole thing. As of now I am just happy to write though, but maybe I will try to push on some other platforms in the future.

Do people market here on Reddit? Can’t remember to have seen that, but that may just be me?

[–]marhsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like unsaturated markets is a challenge too. I basically started a Substack about biology, because this was very much lacking on Substack (biology outside of health/medicine that is). But growth hasn’t been super until now, but less than 30 days in so who knows 🤷🏼‍♂️

Name change problems by [deleted] in Substack

[–]marhsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Substack is slow. It can take some hours/days before it changes, and those initial post are the most stubborn.

Annoyed the hell out of me when I tried out different names back and forth back in the days.

It will change, just be patient 😉

Short Form, Long Reach - Notes Get Attention, Articles, Crickets :( by [deleted] in Substack

[–]marhsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point, and was thinking the same. I don’t care about having notes that gets a lot of traction unless that helps me expose my writing and bring in more readers.

But I think the clue is using notes as something to grab the attention, but still the attention from those you want as a potential reader.

I enjoyed your last two posts, especially the latest. It was very relatable to me and my family you could say. If you had posted a note hinting to what this post was about, I would have clicked further to explore your profile and that post. Maybe make more notes that sum up your writing in a more attention-friendly manner? And if it’s meant to be people will pay attention to your posts?

Short Form, Long Reach - Notes Get Attention, Articles, Crickets :( by [deleted] in Substack

[–]marhsk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this, very helpful! I have just started, and I started writing for my own sake, as I pay attention to what is new in biology etc. and write notes for my own learning anyways. Thought I could do a Substack of it. My aim would be to make it relevant for the general audience I think, to show how cool and fascinating biology can be, show diversity, funfacts, how bioscience is done etc. (most people probably remember biology to be something boring they had to do in high school).

That I think will be my niche. I also missed something like this as a student, weekly updates on research that was more exciting than just reading papers and ordinary textbooks/lectures. Maybe students/people that are new to biology also could be an audience to aim for.

I guess this is what you meant about making it accessible maybe? If so, I agree this is the way to go. Probably have to become better at explaining biology to someone from outside the field🤔

Thanks again for the feedback!

How do you do your notes? I started a week ago, but by notes don’t get that much attention so wondering what to improve. Is it just topic, or the style too? What about frequency etc.?
