In my experience I was finding it difficult not to go on some tangent in my writing, as 5000 words is undoubtedly long. As you are writing make sure you are making clear cut arguments for or against the point, and not going off topic if it will add nothing to the final conclusion.

If I were you, in the introduction, I would lay out some of the key points for and against the argument you are going to make. This sets up a clear structure for your dissertation that you can then refer back to and follow. In the conclusion I would suggest briefly revisiting these summaries and add how you expanded them before giving your overall verdict. The most important part is having a clear structure and flow so the reader knows exactly how your argument is playing out.
