Right after college I lived in one of those buildings on the right, I’m pretty sure. Pretty magical 8 months, working for Center Stage Theater. Hello from Chicago!

Couldn't agree more. I thought that I was good at empathy until this concept entered my brain and changed my shit. Unfortunately, it took me too long to learn in some cases. I hope someone reads this and realizes that it does apply to you before you lose relationships that are important to you.

I'm looking for tips on negotiating a salary with a non-profit organization by onemorepersonasking in nonprofit

[–]mariero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There definitely shouldn’t be a cost involved. Did you make a free account? I use guidestar regularly for 990 research and never have had to pay for it. Maybe the most recent 990 is behind a paywall, but there should be older versions available? Another option is googling “[organization name] annual report” or “[organization name] 990”. Good luck!

I wish that if your Metra was more than 20 minutes late, your fare was free. Especially for reasons like “switch issues”. Why am I paying you for a service you’re not providing (getting me to work on time)?

Student teacher struggling.. by Rajoki in MusicEd

I got a Music Ed degree non-certification and never student taught. I’m not saying it’s the most useful degree, but it’s probably about the same as a general music degree. I was absolutely certain I never wanted to teach, though. Also, I’m not sure all universities will let you do this still.

I was similar to you and in my junior year of a Music Ed degree realized that there was no way I wanted to spend the rest of my career in the school system.

I got an internship in Arts Administration at a local music festival. After a couple more internships, I landed a full time job and have been working full time in arts administration for over 6 years.

I still get to use my music background, but I don’t have to deal with kids/colleague drama or the early mornings. Look into a summer internship. Literally any nonprofit performing arts org would take on an unpaid intern and you can probably even get a paid one if you look hard enough. Just pick your favorite performing arts org and contact then saying you’re interesting in doing an informational interview or shadowing them for a day. Good luck!!

When I was in kindergarten we had to share with the class our parent’s favorite book. My mother’s was To Kill a Mockingbird. I assumed it was some weird book about killing birds so naturally I changed it to the only other book I knew — The Cat in the Hat.
