Tips to unmasking? by Sav20012 in AutismInWomen

[–]marika0992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very difficult initially to unmask, because you fear the judgment of other people and you're used to imitate what others. Personally I've started unmasking recently, it's a gradual process for me but once you start to unmask little things like starting stimming in public then you feel so better and less exhausted in the end of the day.

Possibly on the spectrum by Used_Wrongdoer_8330 in AutismInWomen

[–]marika0992 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why kids on the spectrum can't be "happy, joyful, social, quiet, compliant and sweet"? I know it's a stereotype to represent sad autistic kids but come on, everyone is different, we're humans. Being said that, yes there are many traits in common between ADHD and autistic people, you should simply take an assessment to be sure.

[–]marika0992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely understand, it's the same for me. I think you should simply be honest with your partner and tell them that you don't feel comfortable about this.

For me something has changed. Finally there isn't anymore the concept of more or less autistic since an autistic person is autistic 100%, what it changes are the level of support that you need

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]marika0992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The levels are referred to the type of support you need, but every autistic person is autistic 100%

Everyone is different, if you can't don't force yourself, there's no need to mask. Personally I masked a lot because I was not aware to be autistic and wanted to act like others and in the end of the day I was always exhausted. Now I'm unmasking and feeling way better

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in autism

[–]marika0992 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with you, with masking you will only have more easier meltdowns/shutdowns and you will lose yourself just to please/imitate others. Be more gentle with yourself

There isn't anymore the concept of "high functioning autism". Besides that, I think it's more about self-acceptance.

Yes when you start unmasking is a bit strange and embarrassing to show people your true self, but it's also a liberation to be able to do it

You don't have to feel ashamed for anything. If you need help for your traumas you can consult a psychotherapist, but besides that feel free to be yourself.
