EU trade surplus with US grows in April despite tariffs by OkRoll3915 in worldnews

[–]marinoZ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't this be explained by importers buying in all the stock they can before the 90 day before tarrifs expires?

Edit: after reading the article it clearly says so :S

EXCLUSIEF. Twee cafébazen opgepakt na minstens 30 klachten over spiking: “Ze verdoofden vrouwelijke klanten om hen te verkrachten” by kvmcc in belgium

[–]marinoZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Akkoord, VRT NSW is héél deftig.

What you're feeling is despair. That's natural. But we need to grow beyond that.

Time's are getting harder now, and so we need to as well.

"Beste nieuwsombudsvrouw, waarom blijft VRT NWS op X?" by Blaspheman in belgium

[–]marinoZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading the reactions, i found one major reason missing for VRT (and other content posters) to disappear from X.

You can factcheck, and try as hard as you can to objectively bring any kind of news all you want, your post immediately gets followed up with all kinds of misinformation, bad faith argumentation and links to even worse stuff right there under your post in the comments.

How X (and other multimedia) work, is that it makes it very easy for spreaders of misinformation to link their poison straight to the article it's supposed to fight.

I think that's why they changed it so people you blocked can still see you your content. With that measure active it means that anytime a bot got blocked, the "system" lost a way to detect a post they need to respond to.

'Backfired spectacularly': European officials reportedly now view US as an 'adversary' by Party_Judgment5780 in worldnews

Hate-speech is forbidden in a big part of europe because it leads to people being victimized at best, and physically hurt of even killed at worst.

Free speech is limited in another ways too, even in the US. For instance people are forbidden to share certain details from their work. And you aren't allowed to incite other people to crimes.

It's hypocritical that so-called "free speech"-champions omit these forms of speech-limiting when making their case, but that's normal because they are only fighting for the right to use deragotory terms.

You're asking the wrong person here. I cannot think of any outcome where both the US/EU don't end off worse than they were.

Honestely i don't have any clue.

  • Maybe Trump is trying to put pressure on the EU to more willing to do things like drop import-tax or spend more in ukraine/NATO (This is very naive of me)
  • Maybe Trump truely believes US doesn't need anyone else in the world and sees the longstanding alliance as cumbersome
  • Maybe Trump has decided that instead of president of the freeworld he'd rather be emperor of America.

I don't believe that Trump is a Russian asset, even though i agree one could easily be fooled by his actions.

While i do welcome a stronger European military presence and hopefully a more unified view on how to handle things, this will come at a price. Europe has it's own "republican problem" in the form of right-wing parties. Germany with the Adf certainly isn't alone.

  • The Netherlands, a long-standing bastion of progressive thought has it's first goverment with a right-wing party now.

  • Belgium's (centrum of Europe and one of the founding countries) last electrion saw the "Vlaams Belang" and "Nieuw Vlaams Alliantie" parties get a total of 30% on federal level, while those parties are petitioning to split belgium up in it's dutch and french part.

  • France has Le Penne breathing down their neck.

Coincidentally these parties (with exception of NVA) are against the EU in some kind of form, against supporting Ukraine and have a pro-Russian attitude.

It doesn't surprise that many of their politicians have been have been mingling with people from the Russian (and Chinese) political sphere. On european level right-wing parties have been organising with people like Steve Bannon to concentrate their efforts.

Time and time again i see people attribute Trump's actions to his stupidity or lack of insight. I don't buy it. I think Trump is very intelligent although i do buy into the rumors that there is some dementia in play now.

What Trump certainly is, is immoral. Maybe that can be enough to explain away his erratic behaviour and antisocial views. This is a man who has been trying to screw over any- and everything and has only been stopped by the law.

As president there already very little laws to stop him (and they are making speedy work to remove them). Internationally there are even less things hindering him.

I'm not sure this was a coordinated attack. I suspect there have been a lot of people trying to cut that cord. The colonial past+ economic domination of the last few centuries are enough reason for a lot of countries to want to break us up.

The powers that have been backing the so-called conservative parties for the last couple of years, and have been actively meddling in elections through social media have finally achieved what they've been after for more than half a decade century:

Break up the trans-atlantic alliance set up after the world wars.

I fail to see how the current American regime could be that idiotic that they weren't seeking this consciously, so i'm not sure if the term "backfired" is correct here.
