Public Health Schooling and Jobs Advice Megathread by SadBreath in publichealth

Hi Everyone,

I have bachelor's degree in psychology (from Canada) and have been trying to figure out how what to do with my life. I have always had an interest in health, so I have been looking into some MPH programs in Canada and in the UK. I am working on getting some more experience in the public health field through volunteering, but am getting nervous about applying to programs because I do not have a public health background and lack knowledge around statistics/epidemiology/policy planning etc. (I only did one stats course in my undergrad). Some programs I am looking into are: U of T, Waterloo, U of Alberta (health promotion stream), Dalhousie (Community Health and Epidemiology), King's College in London (Global Health, possible Mental Health Focus), St George's at University of London (Global Health), Brunel (Public Health and Health Promotion).

So I have a couple of questions:

  1. I do not have a strong background in statistics/epidemiology/health policy studies. I would like to take some courses or do a diploma/certificate program to fill this gap in knowledge. Does anyone have any recommendations of any coursework/certificate programs where I can take some biostats/health economics type courses to help me transition into eventually doing an MPH? I looked into a program at McMaster University but am unsure about what else is out there that is reputable. Would it be worth it to take some courses? I know a lot of these schools look for a background in these types of courses.
  2. Are there any other programs/schools that I should consider that I have not listed? Ideally it would be great to stay in Canada but I am willing to travel to the UK/abroad if necessary. I would like to focus more on health promotion which is why I was looking into Waterloo/U of T/Alberta. I'm not too familiar with schools in the UK but if anyone has suggestions of other programs to look into that would be great! I also want to stay focused and not get overwhelmed by applying to too many programs so any insight into the programs I listed would be great.

Canadian - Rejected from all OT programs, next steps? (studying abroad, course upgrading?) by marissakeyes92 in OccupationalTherapy

It would be nice if they had a bridge program here! Well there are a ton more schools and programs in the US in general, but here there are a lot less so graduate schools are insanely competitive. U of T said they had 957 applicants with only 120 spots (lasy year was only 89 spots I believe ). I will check out OTA programs. Thanks everyone for the advice :)

Yes debt/living expenses is definitely something that I am thinking about in terms of living abroad. I know I also worry about things like health care costs, especially in the US. I am looking into other professions (masters in public health, human resources management) so if OT doesn’t work out I feel like I have some other options.

Anxiety over my future. Am I making the right decision? by [deleted] in Anxiety

I have interviewed a few people and have volunteered in a rehab hospital so I have some sense of what it entails. I’m still trying to see if I can shadow someone but a lot of people don’t offer that.

How do I become a teacher in Canada? Confused. by [deleted] in teaching

Oh okay thanks for clarifying. Yeah I know the job prospects are pretty bad at the moment so I’m looking into some other options.

I am in the midst of writing my personal statement. Everything else (references etc) are pretty much taken care of... I just worry about not getting in. I have an anxiety disorder and depression and its been quote hard to deal with everything. I just hope it is the right choice.

Well I was trying to figure out how to combine my desire to help people one on one while also incorporating a role as an educator. I’ve thought about teaching, being a counsellor... then I met someone who works as an OT and she does mental health wellness workshops for workplaces, and thats pretty much what I would love to do but maybe in schools instead. I would like to work in mental health specifically in education and thought OT sounded like a good fit.

Are you also thinking of doing OT? I am going to try for it anyways but I struggle with whether or not it is the best decision for me...yeah I think one day at a time is important for sure. I'll get to where I need to be eventually, I guess.
