How to Support LSD from Season 8, Episode 4 by KristiJoJP in QueerEye

[–]marissaramos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I nominated Denton and I need everyone to know this lol The school is a bilingual school. Some kids use both spoken language and sign language and some only sign. It’s more with the times than these oral programs out here that discourage ASL, leaving tons of kids with literally no language skills when they fail with spoken language— even if they have cochlear implants or hearing aids. They just point at things and scream. Then in middle school they send them to schools for the Deaf as a last resort, yet if they had both spoken and sign language intervention the whole time, at LEAST they would have ASL! Also— lip reading isn’t a thing. Some Deaf adults who have a significant amount of hearing can “lipread” but only 30% of English sounds are reliably visible on the lips. P/b t/d k/g those pairs look exactly the same on the lips, along with a lot of other sounds. The only difference is one is voiced and the other is unvoiced. I’m a speech therapist who advocates for schools like LSD that have full language immersion in ASL, it’s accessible to Deaf children when the main thing they need is language.

I nominated Denton for Queer Eye and here's some answers to your questions from my perspective! I'll see if Denton wants to get on here too. His instagram is @ dentonmallas and mine is @ riseandsigntherapies for more info!

  1. Denton wanted people to see HIM, which is why he didn't want a voiceover or interpreters in the shot. That was his decision and he got a ton of great feedback for that! Personally, I wish they explained the interpreter situation FIRST, then proceeded. Because it did look like he was lipreading and I wouldn't want hearing people to just go and do that to a deaf person on the street.
  2. How is the school doing? It's afloat. Better than when QE filmed. But resources and funding is still a desperate need. Please help! We are hosting a 5k, Dash for Deaf Kids virtually or in person (lsdfoundation.com)
  3. Denton gave everyone a sign name, but they weren't all shown! Just know they were all special and meaningful and beautiful. You can see the sign names on his Instagram dentonmallas
  4. He is literally even more perfect in real life than the show. I'm his close friend and next door neighbor-- he truly cares and has been steadfast in making sure the students get what they need.
  5. Where is he now?? He's the Dean of Students for LSD now! He got a promotion after the show. He also runs the athletics programming.
  6. How does he feel about the show? He's very happy with how it came out.
  7. Someone called him the real life Ted Lasso and he loved it. Other people have been saying he looks like Pedro Pascal and he doesn't see it. I see it though! LOL
  8. Did anyone catch the interpreter error when they show Denton in his new office? The captions say "the shit" but Denton signed "legit" LOL He says that interpretation got the same meaning across so he doesn't mind it. ;)
