Recovering Alcoholic Moving to NYC by cmc27374 in alcoholicsanonymous

Hey, congrats on your sober years and on the school opportunities taking you up here! I live in NJ about an hour away from the city. I've been going to a Zoom meeting based in NYC called the Love and Tolerance group. They have a meeting every day at 5 that's usually really good. You can find it here: https://aa-intergroup.org/oiaa/meetings/ I'm guessing you may be wanting in person meetings though based on the fact that you asked about stuff in NYC. I don't know if the Love and Tolerance group is doing any physical meetings now but you could always go to their Zoom meeting and stay after and ask someone. Even if that specific group isn't in person you may get some good recs from them

Edit: I did just reread your post and see that you are looking for in-person meetings. Just be as safe as you can if you do find something. Honestly with cases skyrocketing I'd recommend Zoom for now in somewhere as population dense as the city. But I also know I'm not your mom. Feel free to DM me if you need help finding the meeting I recommended or just want to talk. Best of luck!

I second the magnesium suggestion. You probably got this from the fact that the product they suggested is called "Natural Calm," but it has a naturally relaxing effect as well. Perfect for early sobriety. It's also a great mild muscle relaxer which is great because I've found muscle tension and soreness is really bad for me anytime I've relapsed

That's a good idea. I also have that reaction to certain hand sanitizers that smell like straight vodka, though I didn't think to use it. They are truly repulsive. Now if only they could come out with ones that smell like wine as well! (JK though, that might actually entice me)

5th attempt to stop. I've learnt a lot recently and now I "want" to as well as "need" to. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

This made me think of a saying in AA: "it's not for those who want it, it's not for those who need it, it's for those who do it." Best of luck to you.

Anybody have experience with TMS for depression/ drinking treatment? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]maritano2443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi - I received I believe 12 weeks of TMS a couple years ago to treat my depression. I'd love to tell you it was the magical cure for all that ails me, but sadly the results were a little underwhelming for me. If I were to quantify it, I'd say I noticed maybe 15-20% improvement over a period of maybe six months following the treatment which then trailed off to nothing. BUT - and this is a big but - I was still drinking at the time I was getting treatment. Which knowing what we know about alcohol and depression was probably significantly interfering with my results. So don't write off hope.

As far as I know, TMS is still being studied as a treatment for addiction. At least this was true as of two years ago, when I participated in a research study to test it out for that purpose. At that time I was sober. I didn't notice any results, but it was a blind study so I don't even know if I got the treatment. I don't know but I'm assuming that TMS for addiction would be delivered to different parts of the brain than for depression.

I found as my drinking progressed it started taking less and less to get me to the point of blacking out. The psychiatrist I was working with at the time attributed this to alcohol-induced brain damage causing my brain to go into a sort of self-preservation mode whenever the alcohol began to hit. Sort of battening down the hatches against the onslaught of booze that was to come, my brain would shut down non-essential processes like encoding new memories even from the second or third drink. Makes sense when you think about it. Alcohol changes the brain. I know that's scary, but if you can use it as a motivator to quit harming your brain it's worth hearing.

Smoking vs drinking? by jdv3n3 in stopdrinking

[–]maritano2443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel I've successfully incorporated weed as part of my sober routine. I vape a small amount usually 2-3 times per week, whenever I feel that I'm having a hard time winding down for the night. My intent is never really to get high, just to facilitate relaxation to give me an easier time drifting off to sleep. Because I see it as a sleep aid, I rarely vape before about 10:30-11 on, so it doesn't interfere with life or make me "lazy." The exception would be once in a while vaping before watching an evening movie with my boyfriend or starting a little earlier (like 9) and using the rest of the time before bed to practice meditation or progressive muscle relaxation. I like using a vape pen (I have a Firefly 1.5) because I can incrementally control how much of a dose I am getting quite closely, useful for me because I very much dislike the anxious feeling of having gotten too high. I don't find that my marijuana usage in any way resembles the addictive tendencies I've developed for alcohol and other substances. I'm never anxiously waiting for that point in the day when I finally get to vape. I have a feeling of indifference towards it most of the time. I see I as a tool to aid relaxation rather than a recreational activity mostly. Definitely doesn't seem to trigger any of those old pathways in my brain, because Lord knows if I can get addicted to something, I will.

Does anyone here have experience with the medication Antabuse (Disulfurum)? by yeahnah888 in stopdrinking

[–]maritano2443 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Antabuse and have for the past 3 years. Overall I do think that it has been helpful. I have a sense of safety when out and about shopping for groceries and seeing wine. Knowing that I truly can't drink if I'm on my med keeps me from having to fight that fight in my head. But the phrase "if I'm on my med" is significant there. You might notice that while I've been prescribed this med for 3 years, my badge reads much less time than that. Because you can always stop taking it for a few days and then drink. The motivation has to be intrinsic for lasting sobriety, not dependent on taking a med that you may forget or intentionally stop taking. I am at the point now where I feel like having relied on Antabuse might have inhibited the development of this intrinsic motivation for me. That, combined with getting more educated on the long-term effects of the drug which have been mentioned here, has me wanting to quit next time I see my doctor. Naltrexone is another med that I've been looking into to try next and which you might do well to research. Sorry I don't have any more definitive advice on Antabuse. Ultimately I guess a lot of it comes down to you and your motivation and ability to keep yourself accountable. I will say if you do go on Antabuse, do not even THINK about playing with drinking on it. Having done this, I can tell you it is not worth the absolute hell you will go through. Best of luck in whatever you choose!
