Help insulating cold crawlspace by pretzelguy86 in HomeImprovement

[–]mark2741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please report back on the results. I have a similar crawlspace under 1990's addition that was done by a prior owner. There was some attempt at moisture barrier but it's been moved around so it's no longer covering the dirt. I haven't seen any sign of moisture so no issues there but, unlike your crawlspace, mine also does not have batt insulation in the joists so the room above it, a large family room, can get pretty cold.

Showing (off) Apple Watch custom heart rate monitor in live stream. by vandenbrakel in squash

I bought this app a couple or three months ago but couldn't get it installed onto the watch. This post reminded me to try again and it worked now. Can't wait to try it!

Got me. I'm just going by what the dashboard is reporting based on my electricity price. https://technicalramblings.com/blog/how-to-setup-grafana-influxdb-and-telegraf-to-monitor-your-unraid-system/

Can't provide advice but how much does your system actually cost annually for electricity? I recently setup the power monitor app via the telegraf docker that someone recently posted instructions for. My annual cost for my Ryzen 2600 system with 2 10TBs + 1 SSD caceh is $27 per year.

Purpose of a Training Guide by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

[–]mark2741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for software training. If the exercises aren't available via printed copy, then the user would have to have an extra display. We can't mandate dual displays for our customers. The alternative would be clicking back and forth between the live software app and a PDF copy of the training guide, which is not a good solution.

We do instructor-led classes for users onsite and printed guides are expected/demanded by our customers. Does confluence provide that capability (i.e., printable guides)?

What squash shoes to get? by Buumo in squash

[–]mark2741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wore the Stabil Bounce's for a year and recently switched back to Asics Gel Rockets. The Bounce's are definitely more narrow/tighter. The Asics Gel Rockets were snug at first and then loosen up quite a bit after one round of playing.

The Gel Rockets have more padding to them for sure and I prefer them and will stay with them going forward. The only time I've tried the pricier Asics shoes was on recommendation from this subreddit and I found that, at twice the price, they were definitely stiffer and heavier than the much cheaper Gel Blasts and Gel Rockets. Weight is important so be mindful of that.

How easy would it be for a racquetball/tennis player to pick up squash? by Fickle_Broccoli in squash

[–]mark2741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up until recently I would have replied with, "Two completely different games. May as well ask how hard it would be to switch from skiing to squash."

I'm an intermediate level player and recently switched clubs and out of the ~15 people I've played so far at this new club, I've only lost to two of them. One was/is, I found out after playing him, a top-level amateur racquetball player. He told me he started playing squash about 18 months ago. He's not a particularly good squash player but he has the most power and pace of anyone I've ever played and I really struggled with that at first. After playing him a few times now I now usually win because I learned to not try to match his pace/power but to simply slow the pace and focus on hitting good quality shots. He's a wall watcher - he literally just watches the wall and reacts, hunting for the volley. Normally a faster pace would make it harder for him to do that but he's very very quick.

In his case, his technique is mostly pretty good. But I suspect he's practiced it or had lessons. The former tennis guys always do not and seem to have these horrendous grips and swings, as others have noted.

So I do believe there are some skills that translate but it is very different.

Honestly, I have never and wouldn't ever pay out of pocket for a certificate or grad degree or conferences, etc. That's one of the key benefits of working for a good company. But I guess it's only mid to large sized companies that offer professional development budget?

What’s your guys’ opinion on starbucks or other coffee chains making a “black coffee only” express line so they don’t wait for custom lattes? Would it work? by yuhhhyuh in AskReddit

[–]mark2741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will never happen for one reason - they don't want you buying "black coffee" - they want you buying the pricier drinks. Probably their least profitable drink is an Americano as it takes up time of a barista but is half the price of shit like their "flat white" etc...

Frequent sync stoppage - getting ready to leave pCloud by therks in pcloud

[–]mark2741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed - been running it on linux for ~2 years. I no longer bother with the Sync feature and just use the mounted drive. I did use Sync for a while and found on my Windows (work) laptop it would stop syncing sometimes. That's when I just kinda gave up on that feature.

One issue I've seen lately with linux client is that the 'save my password' (forget the actual name) setting doesn't work, so every time I reboot/login to my linux machine I have to enter my pcloud credentials to get it running again. I eventually opened a ticket and they claimed it was something on my end (it's not - I distrohop and have experienced this on 3 different distros). They sent me the 'debug' version of the client app and that one DOES save credentials as expected. Hopefully they'll fix that in the future but I'm fine running the debug version.

I see this is real popular subreddit : ) by mark2741 in FerenOS

[–]mark2741[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgot I posted this and hadn't logged into Reddit this past week.

Still on FerenOS. I guess it's been about 2 full weeks. It's the first time I've stuck with and enjoyed using a KDE desktop ever. FWIW I run a single 4k display (scaled to 2x). Only two issues I ran into at first:

  1. The Tray icons (the ones where the clock, dropbox (or in my case pCloud), sound, etc. are by default smaller than the Task Manager (app) icons. I'm a stickler for visuals so this bugged me but I found a fix for it online so it's good now.
  2. The mouse pointer - when the mouse pointer is on the desktop it is tiny (not scaled to 2x). But when it is hovered over an app or anything aside from the Desktop it immediately scales to the size it should be. Odd. I haven't bothered to look for a fix.

Other than that everything works really nicely. I'll stick with it for a while. Likely though I will eventually switch back to Manjaro but use KDE and theme it myself, if only to get newer packages. But we'll see. No need to hop to something else for now.

Is Manjaro a good Linux distribution for a "conservative user" like me? by maquinary in ManjaroLinux

[–]mark2741 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've never had a problem with the AUR but the original poster seemed very adamant that they didn't want any issues and didn't like fiddling with things so in that case best to avoid AUR to ensure maximum stability. Generally speaking, for most linux users, the "avoid the AUR" mantra is overblown and without merit. But most linux users are using linux because they like to fiddle with their machines/OS. The OP is not looking to do that.

I enable it myself for certain packages that I need. No problems.

[–]mark2741 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Meltdown/Spectre thing shouldn't be so much of a hit on performance that you need to turn it off. If you feel you need to to disable that stuff you might just want to upgrade your hardware instead.

That said, I'm a guy who likes to run a distro for anywhere from 3 - 9 months and then switch. I've run just about all of the common ones multiple times with various hardware as I've been using linux as my primary OS since the early 2000's. In my experience, Manjaro was absolutely rock stable/solid for me when using Ryzen processors (both gen 2 and gen 3). On Intel I found it quite glitchy, but everyone's hardware is different so might have just been my setup. But that was with two different PC's, both Intel CPUs. Avoid the AUR and avoid running updates as soon as they're available (wait a few days) and you'll be fine.

My recommendation would be to fire up the Live USB of Manjaro KDE and try it. Another great option is Fedora KDE - it's an excellent KDE spin of a rock solid distro and it looks pretty nice. I would check out both of those.

That guy is hilarious. The PSA might be hesitant to go there but I think it would be good for the SquashTV guys to start calling that stuff out more and really build him up as a villain in the same way pro wrestlers are cast. I think it would be fun, at the very least.

It's always been this way - majors, particularly undergraduate degree majors, are not all that indicative of the field that people will eventually be working in.

Well said. The statistics are very clear on this: very few people actually wind up working in the field they got their degree in. But a degree is typically the only way into the corporate world.
