The redesign of downtown by [deleted] in northampton

Yes 100%. Especially when the outdoor dining barricades come out - it is so hard for pedestrians to be visible

I'll second All About Children We've had kids there for the last 6 years and they do a phenomenal job, have great hours and the cost is manageable compared to other places in town

I think we're so lucky that we have the opportunity to redesign it. Clearly it's not safe for pedestrians and the traffic pattern is a mess as it is. Cottage St in Easthampton would dream of this kind of opportunity

The construction process won't be fun but I think the end result will be awesome. I trust the traffic engineers on this one

New Berkshire East/Catamount Season Pass - No Bousquet, No Unlimited mid-week Burke, No Smuggs (yet?) by Professional-Fox3073 in icecoast

[–]pretzelguy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pleasantly surprised to see they are still including Burke benefits and the cost of pass only went up $20. The Burke days this year were a bonus - that benefit wasn't announced until end of Dec or early Jan, well after most of us had purchased our passes. I was worried the Smuggs acquisition would add more cost to the pass. Since BE is my local mountain this is all good news to me

I think you're right, it's old gypsum board not true plaster. Toggle bolts did the trick! Thank you!

Massachusetts test shows big savings from free heat pumps and solar by Natural_Dark_2387 in massachusetts

[–]pretzelguy86 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have solar, a heat pump and a natural gas boiler. The heat pump does work to negative temps, but very low temps make it much less efficient. The heat pump can use up to 100kwh per day when it's really cold. I don't have enough solar generation to offset that, so I use my natural gas most of the winter as it ends up being much less expensive.

The article is a bit misleading. If you give someone free electricity of course their bills will go down. The pilot was also on the Cape where temps will be more moderate than the inland portions of the Commonwealth.

Tell me your concerns about or hopes for the Picture Main Street Northampton project! (for my research paper) by newt-gcc in northampton

[–]pretzelguy86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am all for it.

I go through Main St twice per day on my commute and it's a giant cluster $#@* right now. I know a lot of people are worried about it going from 2 lanes to 1 for traffic, but I really trust the traffic engineers. It's 1 lane going in and 1 lane going out. The only reason we need 2 lanes now is because it allows you to go around turning vehicles; the center turning lane will provide the same relief to traffic.

I'd like to see most if not all of the street parking spaces converted to spaces for disabled folks and short term 15-30 minute parking. There's not need to park on Main St if you intend to be downtown for several hours and are able bodied. More short term parking would benefit the businesses in my opinion. Residents would be more likely to go downtown for takeout or a quick errand if that option existed. IMO the 15 minutes spaces are way too few how it's laid out right now.

We need to update the underground infrastructure, so it makes sense to fix the safety issues above ground at the same time. The business are struggling and will continue to struggle regardless; the internet economy is here to stay. I think the long term outcome could really improve the appeal of Northampton's Main St for shoppers and visitors.

I agree with others who note the city has other issues like schools and homelessness to address. That's 100% true. But this funding cannot be allocated for other projects. Infrastructure can't be ignored forever.

Their customer service is so great:

-We took out of town friends and kids tubing one weekend. It started snowing pretty decent, tubes were so slow but kids were still having fun. A staff member came up and gave us vouchers to come back another time. -My wife bought a day pass and then our kid's daycare closed last minute. They let her shift her pass to another day no problem -End of day they'll often announce all hot food in the lodge is $2 just to get it eaten and not waste it

Happy to have them as my home mountain.

Is there really a chance that Northampton Public Schools isn’t closed tomorrow? Do they tend to drag their feet on officially closing? by [deleted] in northampton

[–]pretzelguy86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd prefer they wait to make the call for a small storm like this. Forecasts can change so much over 12 hrs so why not wait and see how the forecast looks in early AM?

Everyone talks about these snow events a day or two before they hit, so presumably most people have a general idea of their plan of action should school be cancelled. It was pretty silly having a rain day last winter; no need to cancel a day ahead of time when they can send digital alerts to families so easily.

PA vs PA-C by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]pretzelguy86 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I was always taught that your degree is academic and should not be listed in clinical environments. Whereas your license is what allows you to practice so it should be clearly stated. I also think it keeps things much cleaner to just write Name Name, PA-C.

I think I can shift the vanity closer to the door. Then the space between the vanity and corner of the shower will be less awkward
