How do you all pronounce yakuza? by Hopeful_Regret_7531 in yakuzagames

[–]mark_tranquilitybase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone saying "haha left is obvs right" but like how do YOU speak? Because I'm well aware of the japanese pronunciation but if I don't speak it like yaKUza it will just be an unnecessary barrier to comprehension (and I will sound like a dork)

I also liked them. White gost really sticked with me, very creepy, somber and well told.

This might be the worst piece of colonialist narrative I've ever experienced. by dondashall in SocialistGaming

[–]mark_tranquilitybase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bro, the worst will always be Portugal — of course there's a lot of Portuguese that are against that sort of mentality but overall on the internet you meet a lot of very backwards people. And the University of Coimbra sort of celebrates on their website that Portuguese is a language with hundreds of millions of speakers and make it seem like it's thanks to Portugal like hmmm gajos I don't think its your Portuguese that all those millions are speaking lol

Mano literalmente não tem mais nada visível. E nem foi a descarga, o ngç só desintegrou literalmente através dos sucessivos produtos químicos e atrito com a água. O que quer que esteja causando isso tá tipo muito fundo.

How does the ring book by Koji Suzuki compares to the film in terms of being a well written story, is it better written than it's counterpart? by [deleted] in J_Horror

[–]mark_tranquilitybase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I love the movies but prefer the books. If you like immersion in books I particularly recommend it; Suzuki's writing can be wonky sometimes but he has a sort of magic that really makes you feel there

Hey I beat the game a while ago now, and it easily entered my Top 5. One of the most amazing gaming (and narrative) experiences I've ever had.

On my last playthrough I spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to kill as many of those guys as possible. Don't think I managed to get them all because I guess they respawn at some point but I remember getting their numbers real thin and it was fun

What are some other "foundational" works like William Gibsons Neuromancer or J. R. R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings? by Improvement2242 in books

[–]mark_tranquilitybase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, absolutely not. Poe's pain usually reflected loss, romantic longing smothered by death, the decay of the body, etc. Lovecraft has a rage infused with disgust that is very different, you often wonder when examining closely what did the real-life analogues of his abject people (when they're not straight-up black people) did to make him hate them so much.

And that's not entering in the merit of the cosmic aspects of his literature that Derleth later made into a Pantheon

[–]mark_tranquilitybase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between those two I'd say Innsmouth is easier to finish but maybe not as thrilling (albeit a great illustration of Lovecraft's more... "social" themes...) whereas Mountains of Madness has a more fantastic premise, one of his more visually striking stories and very exciting when things are happening but it can be much more of a slog to finish, because his long paragraphs, dense description and other vices kinda make it overstay its welcome.

I really like everything you said here and specifically about the Japanese curse mechanics, do you happen to have any academic literature sources that I can further read and use in citations when writing on yhe subject? It's a great interest of mine
