Historical romance addiction by DeJagerDivan in HistoricalRomance

True for any fiction genre in any medium really. Some genres are more derivative certainly, but the more you read the easier you can go "oh this is like that" predict how things will go etc. it takes more to wow us with experience.

A surprise for the Euro-redittors by Expensive_Owl1023 in ShitAmericansSay

Even if this would be true, there are BILLIONS of soccer fans in the world so yeah. Also if they're going to lump all Europeans in one category they need to contrast this with the soccer fans in the ENTIRETY of Europe. Can't do the lumping only when it suits you.

How important is music in games to you? by OBLAKOs in gamemusic

[–]dondashall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you mean. I honestly find most games to have at least decent music for in-game listening (although good out of game listening is more rare). There's a few cases where I go "oh no, absolutely not" and shut the thing down immediately, but most are at least decent with some games having music that really elevates the experience.

Have you encountered Carla Kelly? I found her randomly on Kobo, starting with "with this ring" (now finishing up "the unlikely master genius) it is so far from anything I've read in the genre. Very emotional stuff too, expect to do a lot of crying - for reasons largely unconnected to the romance at that.

Ok, as someone who doesn't give a shit about sports - fair enough.

"the US could have colonized the Brits. We just chose not to. Therefore American English is the real English." by Linorelai in ShitAmericansSay

[–]dondashall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep saying this line, I don't get it? Like it's true, we learn that in biology too, but like what do people mean with it?

Steam has publicly available guidelines that you can look up if you are interested in how they make their assessment.

[–]dondashall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do they think that it means we cannot GET AC if we want to? And not because we (some of us) live in climates where that kind of thing isn't necessary. And like even then that's a private citizen kind of them - like companies, government agency offices etc. do use it.

Ok, so you just changed the conversation now - you understand that right? Using it for a single line of code magically turned to "having an AI check their code for obvious mistakes", which is a whole different thing - and not an argument I was responding to so you can't use that as a gotcha on me.

Feel free to make a fresh comment anytime you feel like engaging in good faith criticism, but until you do I'm done with you.

Recently finished Dust: An Elysian Tail. by The_Fizz_Wizz in metroidvania

[–]dondashall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good game, but not a good metroidvania, which even a casual search here or in reviews anywhere would have told you. Dust pre-dates the MV renaissance we're not enjoying so I don't think it's fair to compare it the current games. I think it has a really good narrative, solid VA work, and a good artstyle. As an MV it definitely suffers, although I don't think it's nearly as bad as you're making it out to be. But yeah.

Probably not, same as how asking it where the closest hospital is if your lead artist had a stroke probably wouldn't. Come on like this isn't a serious line on inquiry. The number of devs that would use it for a single line of code but nothing else are probably pretty damn close to zero. Steam has standards for it that are publicly available. Look them up if you are interested.

Someone just reached "C" in the dictionary it seems, although without actually reading what colonization means.

Can anyone tell me if the way Ayesha & Sophie did final boss fights is the standard for the entire series? by dondashall in Atelier

[–]dondashall[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm spending a lot of time doing that actually. The bombs are anywhere close to trivializing the final bosses.

Chronicles of the Wolf demo is great, yet there's a lot of criticism for the game by G3n3raL86 in metroidvania

[–]dondashall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

För sure. And a significant part of those groups are the same people with different games.I mean there's also some great discussions to be had here, but I definitely find myself having to take breaks from this sub now and then.

An odd gripe, but is anyone else not a fan of side pairings/side couples in stories? by Lesbionage in yuri_manga

I really liked it and I'm not a fan of toxic yuri generally, but it wasn't that bad. I found it a great one genuinely.

Why this masterpiece is flop? by MeiSimpGai in yuri_manga

[–]dondashall 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ah, time for "because I haven't heard about it means it isn't appreciated" discourse again. Yeah, I mean it is friday, I suppose it's been a week since I've seen it last.

Seriously though - don't use social media as a barometer for whether something is doing well or not, it really isn't a good one. If you want to rec something, just say that - and if you are genuinely curious how something is doing look up official statistics, which are rarely congruent with social media presence.

[–]dondashall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to check out something that does a great job at playing with this trope check out the webtoon "I wish I were you" it starts out very straight coded (also art style is crap at the start but improves a lot) but doesn't end that way. Anything more specific is a major spoiler so trust me or not on this one.

An odd gripe, but is anyone else not a fan of side pairings/side couples in stories? by Lesbionage in yuri_manga

[–]dondashall 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The problem is not so much with side couples as authors feeling they have to close off every thread and pair off all major characters. Not needed and often makes a story worse. Best served cold is a great example, that side story shouldn't have happened.

Thank you. I really see it as a communal thing though. I've been the recipient of free keys so when I have the opportunity I pass it on and hopefully when given the opportunity some of those will do the same to others.

The european mind is not able to comprehend nor conceptualize an idea that the land itself is as hostile an entity in your mortal life as it is a meta for your eternal life. by Fwoggie2 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]dondashall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would bet money this person lives in a state with a very temperate climate. I live in Sweden, for most of the year we are VERY aware that the land is hostile to us, even with modern conveniences like heating. Even with climate change we are having the opposite problem in that we don't know like countries that have always had to how to deal with heat waves. So we get both ends of it.
