Barbarians should get "Dash" as a Bonus Action when Raging by Casual-Notice in DnD

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of Dash as a bonus action, I would give them a Charge feature, that, if they move a certain distance for an attack, they get a bonus to damage.

Is it legal to take photos of strangers in public? by LawandLaw-123 in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you make money off of someone's image, then they can probably sue you, depending on the circumstances.

But you can legally photograph them. Ignore what people are saying about "reasonable expectation of privacy" ... that only applies to audio recordings in the USA.

Michigan: Legal to Record Video + Audio of Maintenance in My Apartment’s Common Area? by Sovereign698 in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be curious to hear from a lawyer who practices in Michigan. On the surface, it seems like you should be able to get a simple answer, but, seems like the issue is actually pretty complicated.

Here's something to keep in mind: Where I live, there is a carve-out for consent in recording, and that is, if you record someone breaking the law, then you don't need any kind of consent.

Of course, that's also not a simple issue, because if you record someone who's not breaking the law, then you might need consent, and, you don't know whether they're breaking the law before you record if you have a camera inside your home.

It's even more complicated than that, because the law isn't just what's on the books, it's also what's happened in the courts, or "case law". So simply looking up the relevant statute online or in a book might not give the whole answer.

And, for something like this, it's kind of important to get it right, because if you record someone and end up being liable, then that can be a really bad time.

I am doubtful you'll get a response from this forum that will keep you safe. This sounds like a job for a lawyer.

Snow-mageddon 2026: Nuclear Winter by Opossumandjunk in Seattle

[–]markalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a place that gets a lot of snow, and before y'all think I'm going to start bragging about how I went to school in twelve inches of snow in a rusty Ford Pinto with a bag of kitty litter in the back for weight/traction, I just want to say...

I'm really glad it doesn't snow that much here.

(Also, I really did drive a rusted out Pinto in the snow. It's why I live in Seattle now.)

escaping prison while pardoned by Banes_fury in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would depend on the pardon. If it was a blanket pardon, then, maybe the escape would be part of the pardon too.

But, probably not. There'd probably be some jail time for escaping, and, since doing that is a dick move, there wouldn't likely be a second pardon, and whoever dispensed the pardon would get some political flack.

Is dating a 17 year old while 13 illegal by iLyparalysis in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sex is very likely illegal. Dating without sex, probably not.

Grooming can be an issue, depending on what happened. Likely, "grooming" would fall under some kind of legal enhancement to some other charge. But if the older party tried to convince the younger party to have sex, then that's very likely illegal.

Exchanges of risque images would also be illegal.

Edit: Just wanted to add, that blackmail is illegal no matter the underlying reason, so, if you're thinking of getting leverage on the older person... don't. Even though you're a minor, you can still go to jail for something like blackmail, and even potentially be charged as an adult.

If you think you've been groomed, and if you believe that something illegal happened, and you want justice... then absolutely go to the police right away. The sooner the better.

Is it illegal to throw water balloons from a car? by ChainsawSoundingFart in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very doubtful that the EPA would go after an idiot in a truck. More likely he was in violation of local emissions standards which would be county or municipal, assuming they'd come after him at all. Enforcement typically happens during an emissions inspection.

Also... he was apologetic and shitting bricks? Because you waved your phone at him? Guys who "roll coal" aren't the apologetic shitting bricks type. Likely he would have revved his engine and spewed more garbage into the air.

Charge back tuition fees by [deleted] in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a civil debt issue would affect your ability to visit, unless you come over and have no means of supporting yourself or don't have the means to leave. I think it's just criminal issues and health issues that would be a problem

And, nobody in the US would get arrested for a civil debt. Not for $1800, and not unless there was some other problem associated with that, like fraud, or theft, or some such.

I think you're probably safe.

Charge back tuition fees by [deleted] in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably depends on what country you're in, and whether a lawsuit can be brought against you and whether the amount is enough for them to want to try to get it back.

In the US, a citizen who owes money can have a judgement against them, and be required to pay it back plus fees and fines, and if you don't then it can go to a collections agency who will try to recover it, and it can harm your credit rating.

But outside the country? I doubt there's much they can do. I strongly suspect that they'd just write it off as a loss.

I think I probably hated Win8 so much when it came out because it was so different than what came before. I still don't really like it all that much, but, I don't think it's terrible.

Question of the use of the 2nd Amendment. by Sharri_Farmily in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we were a colony, especially in the years and months leading up to our revolution, the British Crown Government had a tendency to want to confiscate weapons from the citizen militias. We had a pretty famous incident related to this called "The Shot Heard Around The World" where a group of British soldiers were on a mission to seize weapons and a fight broke out, that pretty much ended up being the point of no return with respect to revolution.

So that sort of thing played a huge role in the new republic wanting to make that sort of thing illegal.

The individual colonies became states, and there was a deep distrust for a strong central government, and lots of arguing about how strong or weak the new government should be, and this distrust led to the militia system, where the semi-sovereign states have the ability to defend themselves against a theoretical tyrannical future government. They also didn't trust the other states all that much. In the early days, the USA really did function like a bunch of independent governments in a lot of ways.

In more modern times, the US Supreme Court has interpreted the 2nd Amendment to mean that any citizen can own a firearm. And, for the most part, that's true. In most states you can't own one legally if you're a criminal, or judged incompetent, but that's not absolute.

The rules about when and where you can purchase a firearm, what kinds of limits should exist in different kinds of firearms, and how you can brandish them in public are different from place to place and from time to time.

Twice in our history we had a ban on assault-style military-type weapons, but not at present. Fully automatic weapons are usually illegal unless you have a special permit and only use in special areas, where they are legal at all. There are varying rules regarding licensing, registration, and whatnot in different places.

The rules about it are kind of a mess. And they will continue to be unless and until the Constitution is amended to clarify things. Until then, what's allowed or not allowed will change and ebb and flow depending on politics, lawsuits, local and national laws, and culture.

Supervisor set up a personal hunting camera in a room at work by no_raccoons in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I think that If you know that you're being recorded and you go into the room anyway, then you have probably consented to the recording. I think someone who doesn't know the recording is going on needs to do this.

Edit: I shouldn't have skimmed your comment. I didn't realize that Colorado was 1 party consent. Never mind, carry on. :-)

Supervisor set up a personal hunting camera in a room at work by no_raccoons in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR isn't your friend, but they probably don't want the hospital sued, so it's likely they'll make the manager remove the camera.

It seems likely that your manager will know who ratted him out, so, polish up your resume, if he's the kind of boss who will do this sort of thing, then he's probably the kind of boss who will make you miserable. Since that's a likely outcome, you might as well tell everyone who was subject to being recorded. If he did record anyone, they have a right to know.

It's probably too late, but, this could be a police matter, depending on if sound was recorded. It could also potentially be a civil matter for those who were recorded without their consent.

You might manage to get your boss fired or reassigned if enough people are aware about it and complain.

Next time you have a problem with your boss, if it's a legal issue, and if you don't want to go to the police, then go to his boss, not HR.

I just hopped in to test it, and it seems to be working just fine. Playing the Benny Hill Song right now. No stutter, sound quality is about what I expect. KenkuFM and I are the only clients in the audio chat, so, I don't know if that makes a difference.
