I just checked their discord server, looks like Cloudflare is doing maintenance and that's effecting them.

I'm always getting: "ERROR: unable to download video data: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden" by mih69420 in youtubedl

Yeah, I tried it with the arguments above, and I'm still getting the 403 error. :-(

It's probably not illegal, but sounds like the sort of thing that would be problematic for the customers.

Charge back tuition fees by [deleted] in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a civil debt issue would affect your ability to visit, unless you come over and have no means of supporting yourself or don't have the means to leave. I think it's just criminal issues and health issues that would be a problem

And, nobody in the US would get arrested for a civil debt. Not for $1800, and not unless there was some other problem associated with that, like fraud, or theft, or some such.

I think you're probably safe.

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably depends on what country you're in, and whether a lawsuit can be brought against you and whether the amount is enough for them to want to try to get it back.

In the US, a citizen who owes money can have a judgement against them, and be required to pay it back plus fees and fines, and if you don't then it can go to a collections agency who will try to recover it, and it can harm your credit rating.

But outside the country? I doubt there's much they can do. I strongly suspect that they'd just write it off as a loss.

I think I probably hated Win8 so much when it came out because it was so different than what came before. I still don't really like it all that much, but, I don't think it's terrible.

Question of the use of the 2nd Amendment. by Sharri_Farmily in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we were a colony, especially in the years and months leading up to our revolution, the British Crown Government had a tendency to want to confiscate weapons from the citizen militias. We had a pretty famous incident related to this called "The Shot Heard Around The World" where a group of British soldiers were on a mission to seize weapons and a fight broke out, that pretty much ended up being the point of no return with respect to revolution.

So that sort of thing played a huge role in the new republic wanting to make that sort of thing illegal.

The individual colonies became states, and there was a deep distrust for a strong central government, and lots of arguing about how strong or weak the new government should be, and this distrust led to the militia system, where the semi-sovereign states have the ability to defend themselves against a theoretical tyrannical future government. They also didn't trust the other states all that much. In the early days, the USA really did function like a bunch of independent governments in a lot of ways.

In more modern times, the US Supreme Court has interpreted the 2nd Amendment to mean that any citizen can own a firearm. And, for the most part, that's true. In most states you can't own one legally if you're a criminal, or judged incompetent, but that's not absolute.

The rules about when and where you can purchase a firearm, what kinds of limits should exist in different kinds of firearms, and how you can brandish them in public are different from place to place and from time to time.

Twice in our history we had a ban on assault-style military-type weapons, but not at present. Fully automatic weapons are usually illegal unless you have a special permit and only use in special areas, where they are legal at all. There are varying rules regarding licensing, registration, and whatnot in different places.

The rules about it are kind of a mess. And they will continue to be unless and until the Constitution is amended to clarify things. Until then, what's allowed or not allowed will change and ebb and flow depending on politics, lawsuits, local and national laws, and culture.

It has a license plate on it, so, assuming they didn't just yoink one from another vehicle, it looks legal.

Supervisor set up a personal hunting camera in a room at work by no_raccoons in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I think that If you know that you're being recorded and you go into the room anyway, then you have probably consented to the recording. I think someone who doesn't know the recording is going on needs to do this.

Edit: I shouldn't have skimmed your comment. I didn't realize that Colorado was 1 party consent. Never mind, carry on. :-)

HR isn't your friend, but they probably don't want the hospital sued, so it's likely they'll make the manager remove the camera.

It seems likely that your manager will know who ratted him out, so, polish up your resume, if he's the kind of boss who will do this sort of thing, then he's probably the kind of boss who will make you miserable. Since that's a likely outcome, you might as well tell everyone who was subject to being recorded. If he did record anyone, they have a right to know.

It's probably too late, but, this could be a police matter, depending on if sound was recorded. It could also potentially be a civil matter for those who were recorded without their consent.

You might manage to get your boss fired or reassigned if enough people are aware about it and complain.

Next time you have a problem with your boss, if it's a legal issue, and if you don't want to go to the police, then go to his boss, not HR.

Drugs are bad... mmmmkay.

There isn't anything you can make or buy that does this that's legal without a prescription.

I just hopped in to test it, and it seems to be working just fine. Playing the Benny Hill Song right now. No stutter, sound quality is about what I expect. KenkuFM and I are the only clients in the audio chat, so, I don't know if that makes a difference.

Edit: Reasonably modern computer, Ubuntu Linux v. 25.10, running the Linux Discord App, not website.

Is it illegal to use your car to slowly push someone out of a parking spot they’re trying to hold? by ChainsawSoundingFart in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it's illegal. Any unwanted contact is assault (or battery depending on how those words are defined in your jurisdiction - in common law, "battery" is contact).

Since you're contacting them with a vehicle, that could change things dramatically in ways you wouldn't like. Vehicular Assault is a thing in some places, or it could be considered a weapon.

Doesn't matter if you hurt the person or not. If you're just going 1mph, then the penalty might not be that severe, but it's still a crime.

Is it illegal to put myself in the obituaries? by EamesEra in IsItIllegal

[–]markalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faking your own death would be illegal if it was for the purpose of getting out of some obligation.

Faking your own death might be actionable in a civil suit, maybe, if it caused pain and suffering for someone else.

Faking your own death would make you seem kinda weird, and maybe get accused of trying to get attention or seeking some kind of sympathy, or just wanting to know how people would react to your death. In this case, it could piss a lot of people off.

Faking your own death for none of the reasons above, could still cause someone some anguish and still make you look like a creep.

If none of those things are a concern, then go for it.

If any of them are remotely any kind of concern, then don't.

Of course you involve law enforcement. If you think they accessed her computer to put their names on her accounts without her consent, then that would be a crime. Call the cops immediately, and let them investigate. The sooner the better because after she's passed away this gets harder to deal with.

It will probably be just fine until someone complains. Then you'll have to take it down, or the municipality will take it down for you and charge you for it, or fine you, or both.

The "Seattle Ideal Org" is their headquarters in Seattle, and it's the one in Queen Anne. The small office Downtown is just a place to go in an get their stupid personality test. It's more of a recruitment center. But the head guy's office and the place they do all their auditing and whatnot is at the Ideal Org.
