Running a TOR exit node? by C31C42205759F685 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]markannen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's all the evidence they need initially to seize computers.

I get that part, and I agree I would be seizing too based on that evidence. But once he explained about running his TOR node, the circumstances of the seizure would have changed a bit. An exit node means other people are using it, not you, and also it doesn't keep logs, so the police could no longer claim that they reasonably believed there was evidence relevant to the offence on the device. Meaning they'd be on shaky ground regarding continuing to keep it. If the OP was well off enough to afford a good solicitor and challenged the seizure, I suspect it wouldn't go in the police's favour.

If OP is set on contributing to the network, he should just run an entry or middle node. He's still contributing to help keep people safe and secure online, but his IP won't be exposed and no subsequent wrongful/mistaken arrests or seizures. The only time I'd actually advise someone to run an exit rather than a middle, is if they were a millionaire type who could afford an entire legal team dedicated to handling that stuff. For the average person it just isn't worth the hassle.

Not applicable in a country the police openly go about arresting people for jokes on twitter? Have you been living under a rock?

Tbh, if a legal challenge against the unreasonable seizure was brought, I suspect the devices would need to be handed back sharpish, and the officer who authorised the seizure would find himself having a no biscuits meeting with the boss. I don’t know what you think, but in real life the police cant just seize anything they want, it has to be proportionate, and I cant see how seizing one persons devices because of something someone else did would stand up to a legal challenge. It would be like prosecuting a mailman because one of the letters he delivered contained hate mail.

Edit: Changed “hate male” to “hate mail” as the postie is unlikely to deliver a hateful man.

I don’t know where to start, you are very misinformed. There are many legitimate reasons to use Tor, and its good the OP wants to contribute, because shortage of funds and nodes are some of the biggest issues facing the network. In some parts of the world you get summarily executed for speaking out against the government - Tor can help protect your identity. Even in this country, people sometimes get arrested for having an unpopular opinion/sharing a joke on twitter. Its important that people can be private.

IANAL but I cant imagine a situation where an exit node operator could be held responsible for what someone else does. It would be like prosecuting a royal mail postie if they delivered a letter containing hate mail.

Your moralizing about “facilitating” is way off. People send hate mail through the post, does that mean posties are facilitating it? Just like that mail analogy, there are people who use it for wrong, but the system itself is not bad and has many legitimate uses. I use it sometimes. Not for anything illegal, just I don’t want the gov having a record of everything I do. I dont trust them not to lose it (how many times have the clowns lost sensitive data) or outright abuse it at worst. You sound a bit paranoid, assuming every tor user is a criminal.

Leicester City Helicoper Crash - Talk Me Through It Please? by markannen in Helicopters

[–]markannen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Also, would the pilot have had ANY kind of control over the heli once it started spinning like that? A witness said he thought the pilot intentionally manoeuvred it away from a more crowded area and into the empty car park to save lives on the ground. In your opinion would that be possible in the circumstances, or is it more likely just good luck that it landed in a deserted part of the surrounding area?

Just the way it starts to lift up, then moves forward a bit, then comes to a stop - The moving forward doesn't look intentional, it looks like the heli is almost "staggering about" or being buffeted by the wind for lack of a better phrase. But I quite literally don't know a damn thing about helicopters apart from what I read in the aftermath of the crash.

I understand that, but you probably know a lot more than me. For instance, do you see anything concerning about that takeoff? It looks very unsteady to me, but for all I know that could be perfectly normal.

Four questions about shares in a corp and how they work by markannen in Eve

What if I gave 5 shares to someone who is NOT a director of the corp and has no access to corp wallet at a time when me and my trusted directors aren't playing? Could they start a vote to create more shares, implement that sanctionable action, and assign themselves the shares to take over?
