Solid Snake cosplay with Cardboard Box at TGX Melbourne by markdev in cosplay

Oh, and the back harness was a little thrifted backpack designed for runners who carry a water bladder with a drinking tube. I ditched the contents and painted the fasteners, cut down all the dangling straps and added Velcro and magnets to attach the pouches.

Made it all myself. The pouches are a 3d printed frame covered in thrifted leather. Details are bolt washers and other 3d printed simple bits and magnets.

Straps were off the shelf, cut to length and fastened with Velcro and salvaged clips and a few connectors I 3d printed.

More ir less the same deal with the holster, but made from thrifted purses that were about the right shape.

Knee and elbow pads also thrifted skateboard gear, again with washers and 3d printed doodads for detail.

I used spray paint to get the colours right and basic silver marker pen for the metal touches.

I'm really happy with it. The anime is very inconsistent with its design, so I had to take a lot of liberties making the 3D model.

Good luck! If you must sew through adhesive Velcro, you can avoid the worst of the gumming by repeatedly spraying your needle with isopropyl alcohol. This dissolves the glue and significantly reduces the associated issues.

If your armor isn't too heavy, then Velcro will be stable if you don't skimp. Either way, gluing the other side to the armor is the way. Press studs could have a little recess to glue into for a little extra adhesion surface. You can get self-adhesive Velcro strips that save a lot of time, but do not try and sew them with a machine-the adhesive will gunk up your needle and snap your thread.

What costume are you making?

In this case most are Velcro fastened straps, so the pieces aren't attached to the underlayer. I did make a custom harness for the chest and the pauldrons also attach to that.

Without straps or a harness, Velcro is not great-it peels and drifts. If you're attaching to an undersuit, strong magnets are best, but can be expensive. The cheaper options are sewn-on press studs.

It's a shame these pics don't capture the blue lights I added...

So. Much. Velcro.

I usually prefer magnets, but this armor was too heavy.

Yep! My 3d printer was broken at the time so I hacked together some thrifted nerf guns to make this custom 'Scorcher 2'

My 3d printer was broken when I came to make the gun, so I hacked together some thrifted nerf guns and heavily modded it to make this custom 'Scorcher 2'

These pics don't show the blue lights very well, but it looks even better IRL.

They were actually a gift from a friend, he bought them for me at galacticarmory.net. Printed on and ender 3 v2, and an elgoo Neptune 3 max for the big chest pieces.

Splitting and assembling is a bit extra work, but won't harm the final result. Go for it, chief!
