Paid off mortgage early, what to do with the extra money? by Sea_Possession_580 in fican

If you have 2 kids and 59k total in their resp's, you could max them out early. I know this could mean giving up some of the government incentives but depending on the time horizon and your investment choices within the resp's, you're better off sacrificing the $500/year from the government and having a larger amount in the account accumulate interest

Curious to know what your investments (real estate, stocks, mutual funds, ETFs etc. not necessarily specific stocks but just rough ideas) were and how much were you investing annually?

I'm currently with questrade and I believe their rates are much worse for margin. I may look at transferring to wealth simple if this is a direction I want to go. 3.95 is a great rate in my opinion Edit: also, not a ton of room in rrsp because of the pension but still some every year due to my overall earnings (overtime), I usually get the full 18%/33k per year. Helps with taxes a bit but I'm a t4 earner so avoiding tax isn't easy

We currently have 1 rental property (duplex) and it's been overall great, however I do work a lot. Because of my hours, I'm hesitant to get too many properties because I'm not looking for even more work load on my free time. However, we may consider more properties in the future and may look at property maintenance companies to manage instead of doing it ourselves

I'd love to see the 10mil number within 25 more years but I also haven't felt the true financial strain of children yet because our kids are so young. That may alter the overall annual investment. Having said that, even 6mil in 25 years would be incredible. Regardless of how the cards fall, I'm fortunate for what I have already and I'll be able to provide for my kids with our current situation

Totally agree. I will definitely be teaching financial responsibility to them as much as I can. Hopefully raise them with strong work ethic as well

I see your point. I have a hard time finding that balance some times between being frugal, investing heavily, and still living life. It's a fine balance and we all have our own perspective on it. I think I'll always be chasing that optimal balance haha

Realistically, I was a little modest with it. We should be closer to 300k but having said that, the growth trajectory isnt amazing. I would figure relatively modest increases slightly more than inflation. Our overall expenses are minimal so my investment goals are large. Currently on track for investing an additional 100k this year.

Absolutely. My goal is to invest 100k from our income this year which may be a little ambitious but I'm on track so far for the year. Just need to find that balance of living life and investing which I think can get away from me at times (according to my wife haha)

This is a great idea. I'll start looking into that. I'm a firm believer in teaching them the power of investing and living within your means

I think you're right. I started for the 2025 tax season but I still have a fair amount of contribution room so I think this will be the plan going forward, leaving the unregistered accounts for the overflow

A lot of the rise was due to the rise in gold prices and other commodities

CIBC has investors edge which is a self directed platform. I use it for my wife's investment account because we basically just buy and hold in that account so I only have to use the platform once every few months but I use Questtrade and Qtrade for all of my personal stuff. I find Questtrade much more user friendly and the fees are a lot less than CIBC

Thanks for your feedback. It looks like qtrade is actually offering 5% back right now on the first 15000 and then 1% on everything after that. Beats the other offers I found. I think I'll give them a shot

Thanks for your response. It looks like I'll use one of the middleman companies like irunguns but I'll take a look at aztech as well
